    Icon Halo-inspired Sculpt -- WIP

Here is a halo-inspired work in progress that I've been playing with on-and-off for a few weeks now. I'm hoping that posting it up here will motivate me to start working on it more often.

My plan was to sculpt Master Chief jamming a plasma grenade up under a brute chieftan's jaw or chin. For anyone who doesn't know Halo, these are the big baddies in the game.

I drew a quick sketch to get an idea.

I bought some blue LEDs and plan to wire it up the armature into place at Master Chief's hand to hopefully get a plasma grenade that glows with a flick of a switch. I already have the wiring and batteries set to go when I begin building that part of the sculpt. Here is what I have so far.

I wanted to focus a bit on the under structure even though it won't be seen under all the armor later on, just for a bit of practice and so I knew the form would be correct later.

    Most of the head done

The in-game theater mode has been invaluable for studying both models. I can pause a replayed film at any point, zoom in, and take shots from any angle. Hopefully he will look something like this at the end...

    YRAT!!

Good to see you're back on the boards. I like the approach and the idea for the LED. Looks like an ambitious project. Cant wait to check in on the progress. See ya around...

there's a whole range of sizes and shapes at the local AC Moore. they're only a couple bucks each.

i had a problem with this big one though, i left it in the oven for too long (as you can see from the overcooked torso) and the cheap pine warped very badly. to fix it, it was screwed into the larger base you see below it.

this is so freakin' cool!!!! i really like all the work you've done. william paquet did a tutorial on baking on another site i frequent and the color that you see on the torso is really a good thing it means that the clay has achieved a very hard nature. keep up the good work!

Cool idea, and its looking pretty nice. I would however like to see a change in the chief's stance in the final. Having both hands up there looks incredibly awkward. Having one hand push the grenade in while the other stabs him with an energy sword is so much more interesting and dynamic. But your certainly not limited to that.

the plan is to have MC's left arm pushing back the brute's right arm, with the chieftan sort of trying to grab MC to get him off. are you confusing the brute's shoulder for the chief's left arm in the original sketch?

the idea was for the stiff-arm, and MC sort of sneaking in for the grenade stick, but now you have me thinking about other possibilities. hmmmm.... well i will certainly have a fair bit of time to think about it before i begin working on him.

I think you are starting too early on the detail and need to work on getting the structure down. The pecs look off.

What do you think about Halo 3:Recon? It looks like its shaping up to be a hell of an expansion. Features ODST...

Yes, I did miss read the original image, so feel free to forget my previous, and incorrect interpretation.

As for Halo 3:Recon, fingers crossed. But should only be around thirty bucks, so thats a plus.

    Skewed perspective?

    YRAT,

I have been staring at the piece and I think Bai Fan is just seeing one of those last pics that may be presenting a weird angle. I see what he is saying based on that pic alone, but don't think it is problem in the other shots. I think it is just a perspective issue in that shot. Having a lot of experience in shooting sculpts, there are always angles that don't work as the camera sees it a bit differently than our own eyes in reality. You certainly look like you know what you are doing. Rock on...and don't disappear for so long. We want updates!

Thanks for checking out my site, www.kingjovis.com and the kind words. I should get some posts of my work up here. Maybe this weekend. Make sure you register on kingjovis.com as I will be adding finished images that will be viewable by subscribers only. Don't worry...it's free...just want to have some images password protected.

Say what you will, I still think they look off. Especially with a lack of a visual clavicle in front of the sternomastoid.

I stick with my comment that it is too early to worry about the pattern on the shirt, especially when most of that shirt is going to be covered by armor (as per the sketch).

Take what you will, leave the rest.

I always pictured brutes being a little beefier. Especially the chieftains, which
    I think your modeling.

On an unrelated note, Bai Fan, you double post A LOT. You could certainly save space and time by just editing posts or just doing it once.

    I do at that.

I could save space, but not time. Quick posting is faster... and the threads I post in rarely get long enough for it to matter.

I am sorry it bothers you.
