Hey man, looking great! Argh, I think you still might have me beat with those colors...

The shading on the forehead looks a bit strange because there's a line of midtone that streaks all the way across straight into the part that should be highlighted, but that's all I can see. Are you planning on updating this one?

drewfarr: It's not a contest But I do enjoy the challenge of colour. About that midtone streatk, you're totally right! Didn't notice that. I'll probably update because I like it so far, but not really soon.

King Cobra: Thanks, and you're right.

Hmm... my crit would be to stick with bigger brushes unless you absolutely have to go smaller. Like, I use lots of massive brushes for shading(since all the brushes I use are hard). This keeps the lights and darks from getting too messy with small strokes that throw the perception of the highlights and shadows. Other than that, it looks like you pretty much know what your doing!

It took me a while to get comfortable with it, but it helps like you wouldnt believe Cant wait for tomorrow man.

Good start. I like what you've posted so far. A few points of criticism, though:
    1. You might want to use larger brushes to block in the shading first and use smaller, lower opacity ones to blend in the major shades,

    2. I would recommend doing some drawings from life.

    3. I know you only have 2 posts on this thread, but you should try to have more variety to keep things fun.

drewfarr: I actually did that for these - but now I realize that the when I moved to smaller brushes they were probably too opaque.. thus eliminating the purpose

ninjacat11: Glad to have a new SSG member! Welcome. About your points:
    1. See above
    2. Good idea. Hard to do with a desktop comp., but definitely I will make a point of doing real pencil sketching from life.
    3. Haha, that's actually complete coincidence - in fact, faces are my least favourite thing to do. But no worries, I will keep things changing up.

    --

Now, the sketch of the day as promised! As of starting this sketchbook, I have become really busy -- funny that. But I did have 20 minutes to spend tonight.
    So here's the result.

I know the brushes are small, but there were so many colour variations all over the place this seemed to make sense.

haha, well keep an eye on that opacity! Nice sketch, Id definitely like to see this one finished.
I too have been a bit unlucky since we've started this(haven't painted anything decent today), but we must push on

hello, hello, & all that, welcome to the SSG.

that being said, i'm loving your dedication to the painting a day! (i need to scan ;u; )

anyways, interesting that you choose black as your starting canvas, what do you think of a more mid tone in a complimentary hue?

really like the eye here, with glare especially.

drewfarr: Indeed. Just keep at it...

moroi: Yeah, I thought about it, but I thought black gave a dramatic look. Maybe if I finish this I'll change it though -- the beauty of layers! :p

These were not done today, but I have a whole bunch of sketches from various times I thought would be a good idea to post.

I want to see . . . full figure and gesture studies. Also, have you considered painting onto a midtone background instead of black? Everything tends to look super high contrast that way which can be a nice effect but it does tend to make every picture look like it is 'glowing'.

mysociallink: Thanks. Your images/smileys don't seem to be working though.

Blythe: I guess you're right about the backgrounds; I'll experiment. About full figure etc., my art teacher did suggest that I take life drawing classes. I haven't gone through with that (might be weird being the only 15 year old there) but I might do it sometime. But for now, how would you suggest I improve my figure drawing skills?

Yes, some full gesture drawings would definitely do you some good. You might want to watch your proportions too.

I digga the shirta. nice sketches there

Thoughts on the head: The chin looks slightly receded, the eyes are very large, and the nose is a bit too big for the lips. Structurally its pretty sound, but visually these throw it off.

Here's todays sketch(es). I got about 11 anatomy books from the library, all of which are pretty helpful. If anyone wants the info on the best ones I can provide the titles/authors etc.

Nice studies! I haven't done many(any) muscle sketches, so I cant comment here, but I have one issue with the leg: The dark patch to the right of the ankle bump looks a little strange. Not anatomically incorrect per se', but it doesnt seem to add much, and just comes off as... clutter?

I dunno how to put it exactly Ha, but anyway, thats a very minor crit, so feel free to ignore...

I gotta hurry up and get a couple pencil sketches done. The end of the day always comes so fast!

hey, i'm happy to see some lines here. huge improvement from the earlier sketches that looked like they had some smudged (?) shading.

Thank you both. I'm not sure myself that this is my 'best', but I do think I'm improving by doing this everyday (or at least trying to!)

I squeezed in another one today. Catching up for the missed sketch I suppose.

I like your work, Blendit. The long face of the one sketch you put up that day you didn't do your daily puts me in mind of a pedantic person--the kind that annoy you because they are *so* pedantic. sorry for any abruptness in my thank-you post on my sb, but I tend to be a bit abrupt sometimes, and my inherent tactlessness gets in the way.

Your latest muscle study isn't quite as good as the 2nd one, but it's still really nice.
