Well... I'm here for some honest critique on my sketches, which I had a hard time getting back on my DeviantArt account...
Be simple, be brutal, tear it apart, piece by piece, and the next pic in this thread will be at least twice as good as this one, which isn't saying much, but hey, it's a start.

Not as bad as you make it out to be
But it's not enough! To get better critique you'll need to post alot of sketches in one go so that folks can get a better idea of where you're at as an artist. That's all I can say for now!

Decided to start updating this thing, again. I'll get right on those sketches, Slothboy, I appreciate the encouragement. I'll try to update this sketchbook as frequently as possible.

ColorExcursion, thanks for the advice, but that first drawing was made more than a year ago. I think I've worked on my little hairy line problem, since then, though I still have some trouble getting a line to go the way I want.

dude cool start for your sketchbook your drawings could use some more contrast or darkend more. Id just throw over an adjustment layer in photoshop for it.

Omert, I don't own a copy of photoshop, but I will try to darken my lines. Journey, eh? I like the sound of that.

Thanks, Gogo. As we all know, there is no thrust quite like a pelvic thrust.

I'll make the study of proportions my top priority, Slothboy.

Oh, proportions. Fun. The following picture was referenced from an Andrew Loomis drawing.



The tricky thing about proportions is how a single miscalculation can set off an entire picture, as evidenced by the above. The next is a fifteen minute drawing referenced from a photograph on Characterdesigns.com.

Hey, does anyone who isn't computer illiterate (as I am) know how I could shrink these pictures so that they are less massive? It's kind of an eyesore.

Hey Basham thanks for dropping by my sketchbook, you have some good things going on here, its nice to see you mixing some original stuff in with your studies..which is something I really need to do more of. I have a similar problem with some of my stuff looking to light on the computer, if you want to try darkening it some there is a free program called Gimp you might want to try.

Actually, Trailblazer, I already have GIMP installed on my computer. I'd like to learn how to make it darker traditionally before resorting to a program, though.

And I agree, you should work more with original stuff alongside your studies. Studies are very helpful, but to what end if you don't work things out on your own, too? Humans aren't meat cameras.

Try turning one of your studies into something weird, like I did here.

Holy hell, Mike Butkus. I really appreciate the encouragement, getting complements from an artist like you is a great motivator. I'll make a habit of going around, complementing aspiring artists when I'm as good as you.

Trailblazer, that was a fantastic idea. With my line darkness problem more or less solved, I can focus on an even more important issue: Consistency.

Recently, my art has been ranging from awesomely okay,





To awesomely bad.



Anyone have any advice to help me achieve some consistency, here? I've had this problem for a while.

Most of these were referenced from Sheldon Borenstein or Burne Hogarth.

Great start! Some very nice figures.

Try working with charcoal or soft pastels a bit and then go back to penciling. You'll get a better grasp of carving out mass with tones which is a huge part of Hogarth's style in my opinion.

You definitely picked up on the intense proportion focus Hogarth has ;D.

I'm not sure how to take that, Blondebeard. I like Hogarth's style, but I don't really want to become a little Hogarth clone.

Still, I've decided to take your advice. I'm using charcoal exclusively for the rest of this week.






Still having consistency issues. If anyone has any suggestions as to charcoal techniques I should try or refine, let me know.
