Accepted Portfolios?

I was looking for a thread with people's portfolios when they applied art school but I couldn't find one ... SO I MADE ONE =D

I just wanted to see what kind of works people send in and I know that levels vary even within same art schools due to admission factors. However it'd be great to see what people came up with when they were my age =D

So if you guys don't mind please either link me or attach pics of your portfolio, and I will eagerly drool at them OH and tell me what school *and maybe major?) you applied to just for the sake of my curiosity.

A lot of portfolios are heavily based upon figure drawing and observational stuff but it kind of depends on which college you're looking for because each one has different requirements.

You know, this actually is not a bad idea for a thread. If I get accepted I'll put mine up. I think setting up Guidelines in the first post in bold would be good though; like "Write the name of the school, major applied for, and what year you applied. This should compensate for the variety of portfolios between schools and majors.

edit: Great idea Justin! I know some people don't think looking through everyone else's portfolio is something good to do but I did it last year and it really put things into perspective, helped me gauge myself, and served as a great source of inspiration. Not to mention the work of all those talented CalArts applicants over on Animated Buzz really scared me to pieces and made me realize I had to get my stuff together and work my butt off if I wanted to even stand a chance.

CalArts Character Animation BFA for Fall 2008
This was my portfolio for CalArts Character Animation (in that order :P)
The biggest thing I had was on legal sized paper so I didn't want to send it in a nice portfolio case that would overshadow them, plus those cost money. I just sent them in a purple paper duotang folder with a masking tape/sharpie label... they didn't seem to mind, lol.

I was accepted and got a $15K Walt Disney Character Animation Scholarship offer from them.

I was accepted and got a $10K Presidential Scholarship and $3K Ringling Scholarship from them for a total of $13K offered.

The car/house I did with Prisma colored pencils(NEVER AGAIN!), the three square self portraits and teapot are done in oil paint, and that terrible collage piece is ink, colored pencil, and random magazine cut-outs. I think the graphite pieces are pretty easy to spot.

Nice saint! I remember those, but looking at other portfolios makes me sad... I was told by the director of the program I'm submitting to that "hmm, about 40 pages should be fine."

COLORED PENCILS!!!!!?!?!?!?! wtf, thats insane. i think I would die lol. I tried to do a simple still life with colored pencils and after about 20 minutes i wanted to burn them all in my fireplace lol.

OMG! You are amazing! I'm glad I looked at that, you've inspired me to try harder with my pencils. I was just wondering what kind you use, I might want to dig some up.

Great thread, I'll be lurking here. I've been tearing through colleges like mad, and I'm eyeing Ringling, so I want to see what other people submitted to get in.

Prisma colors FTW! Also make sure you buy some clear blender pencils. They really help everything to meld together and look much more opaque.

Prisma colors are the best colored pencils i have used but they break on me all the time and they get used up fast, but that might be because i press too hard, which is why colored pencils annoy me, they break at anytime and it takes forever to color one little spot.

when you make a post scroll down to additional options and click manage attachments. Then you just upload it from your computer.

Your portfolio was the first Ringling portfolio I saw, before you knew you won the big scholarship. It scared the hell out of me.

I would like to point out that you don't even need to be close to the levels of these portfolios to get accepted. Few second year illustrators are this good...

Attached is my portfolio for CalArts Character Animation BFA for 2008. I sent it off in a boring 18x24 Itoya case, right before the priority cutoff. The scholarship award they offered was $10k (I'm going to be paying off those student loans for the rest of my life T_T). I resized the images on the smaller side for the forums, so if they're too hard to see, larger versions are available here.

Heres my Portfolio, everything was in my portfolio that was posted besides the some of the mixed medias, but everything here was in my AP studio art portfolio. I was accepted as an Illustration Major for Ringling College of Art and Design. The only thing that is not included is my figure work (I don't have digital copies on this computer).

NEVER, never, never, never send in originals. NEVER. Most college sites will even state that in their submission guidelines as well as the usual disclaimer: "Portfolio materials cannot be returned." Too expensive to ship, too easy to get damaged or lost, can't send to more than one college, etc.

You can scan small pieces and photograph large ones (outdoor light, sheet used as a background--or you can pay to have it done). Schools will generally give specific instructions on the types of portfolios you can send, and those will include: CD/DVD (as files or presentation in PowerPoint, Flash, HTML, etc.), slides, demo reels (DVD/VHS). Look up the ones you're interested in and see what instructions they provide.
