OMG it's been too long since my last update...school always does that to my updates. Anyway, I've noticed how little digital stuff I have to show, although I have quite a bit of unfinished stuff I'm not showing.
Heres a bunch of sketchbook pages that I photographed because they would have taken forever to scan in, so sorry for the lack of quality. Also some life drawings.

FoxofSnow: Thanks. Nah, I really don't do much mechanical stuff, although I should really try it out for a change of pace and practice. Right now I really feel like I'm struggling with my main focus which is character design. I think when I feel like I'm starting to grasp that I may try some new thinks. Although I will try adding more mechanical things in the form of armor and details on characters. Thanks.

Well, here's a small update, but I felt the need to do it before it piles up. Anyway, just a few drawings and an oil painting Leyendecker study WIP. Like I mentioned this is my last semester and I have a feeling I won't have too much free time for digital work, so the next few months may be very traditional oriented but either way, I'm jumping into digital work pretty hard once I'm done with school.

Cool new updates...the football player is badass. Nice use of colour on that one. Deceptively simple actually. Very nice!

One thing I didn't catch the last time I looked through your drawings is that you seem to be systematically forgetting to add your figure's face. Your figures look like soulless shells! Beautifully rendered indeed...but they have no identity! Don't get me wrong...we've all made that mistake...I've done it countless times, but it's important to remember to do the face. You don't even need to do anything special either, just a few lines to show the eyes, mouth and nose really (maybe the eyebrows as well)...

Anyways...best wishes to you and keep rockin!

Peetaer: Hey thanks. I was consciously leaving the faces in my life drawings out so I wouldn't loose time on the actual figure which is the real focus. Although I should probably at least gesture/sketch out the face. I should probably put more love into the head/hands/feet in those life drawings which I always neglect. Thanks.


Well everyone, I'm not dead, I've just been busy with school. I'm pretty happy because I'm finally done with the community college I was going to, and graduated yesterday. I've been ready to be done with school for awhile now and have been really looking forward to starting my own art schedule. I need to work it out in more detail but I'm going for 8-9 or so hours a day, Monday-Friday, for around 3 months or so while I build a portfolio and improve as much as possible. Then I'm going to look into jumping into freelance work, starting slow and building up from there. We'll see how that goes.
I'm finally done with school and feel like I have artistic freedom to study how I choose. This is my plan as it stands now.

Anyway, here's some sketchbook pages for now, and I'll be posting everything else that I did that was worthwhile this semester in a day or so. This weekend is full of graduations/parties/work so I probably won't have time. But I'll get the rest up very soon.
I also plan on posting a lot more now and being more active in the community here now that I'm out of school on my own schedule. Looking forward to these coming months. XD

Well I don't have a whole lot to post, but wanted to post because its been two years today since I started this sketchbook.
I have a lot of unfinished/failed stuff, but only have some sketchbook pages, a failed character that I felt like I'd throw up just for keeping track, and a self portrait.
I feel meh about the self portrait, tried to use more contrast this time, may have used too much. Whatever. Onward.

Hey, lots of hard work going on in here.. if you would like some ideas for improving, I think maybe work on your construction a little more. Mouth in your latest self portrait seems too high for example..
However I think you're going to make it, your rendering is coming along very nicely.

Alright guys, I haven't been dead or slacking, just lazy on updating and it's definitely piled up. So I took some time yesterday and scanned alllll my stuff and organized my digital stuff so here it is, going to do it in two posts.

I feel like I've been learning more on my own since I've been out of school and it's been pretty fun making my own schedule although I need to get better about not getting distracted, still working on that.

I've kept saying I feel like I've been waiting for something to click in my head and allow me to do characters and imaginative work like I feel I should be capable of doing, and I feel like it's finally STARTING to click, so I'm happy about that. Just got to push it further. I'm posting my sketches first put I'll post my digital stuff more or less in the order I did them so maybe you can tell what I mean about it starting to click for me.
Been focusing a lot on form and value and I'm going to keep that up, also a lot of this stuff is copied/studied from random other artists on CA and otherwise. I think some artists I looked at were Cos Koniotis, Branko, Jasper, D@aniel, etc. Some studies, some failed work, some experiments, some WIPs etc.

Also, if anyone is interested I've been doing a livestream at www.livestream.com/untouched24 Mon-Fri at 10am PST 1pm EST to kind of have something going for the Crimson Daggers while Dave is busy with work and everything. I kind of suck, but it's more about studying and trying to get better for anyone who may care to join. I basically just do a study, or anything I feel I should be working on.

Your pencils are really strong, that is a good sign. Good construction and things are clear.

Digitals are fantastic too, you aren't so far off either, you could perhaps look at posture in your work, I see it in some of your pencils but not so much in your painted things.

Man you are sure ramping up your studies! There's a huge improvement from where the link to your sketchbook takes you up to the last page. Have you been streaming? Because dave is nowhere in sight, and I'm sure it would help you if you started it back up.

You seem to have the same problem as me, where your life drawings have developed an efficient and descriptive style, but it your imagination work does not reflect it. IMO you should do more drawing from imagination, and when you're doing it, try to use the same process you do for life drawing.

Another thing I recommend is going back to basics in every single way. From what I see you're still struggling with giving three-dimentionality to form that you design, so break it down into cylinders, spheres and cones. Seriously. Read the Vilppu Drawing Manual for that, because that book made me realize that I've been drawing wrong for years. Furthermore, as you pointed out, actually doing the Scott Robertson forms, even if you just repeat the exact same things he does, helps immensely with recognizing values. Though life drawing would too, I'd imagine.
