yeah. never did like cars. hell, dont even have a driving licence and been doing fine without over 30 years now :p
I like the pose too, but I think the tail part can use some shape definition; it's just a plain S now.. make it dolphin-like or fish like or whatever, but get some shape for muscle and stuff.

Wow Mock, you became really good really fast.

Love the stuff girl, stunning work.

Hahaha I can't critique anything, I'm just basking in the warm glow of nice artwork.
I'm rooting for you to get into the CA atelier, I'm sure you'll make it in!

Spent most of today on this one. So I guess.. ummmm... around 7 hours of painting so far, no references. I broke down some major personal barriers with this one, I think. There's some wonky anatomy bits, some intentional, some not, but I'm overall happy with it. I have a sick love of translucent things.

I'll probably put several more hours into detailing it and fixing issues before I add it portfolio #2 for the atelier.

Bioluminescence is the best thing in the entire fucking world.

Edit: Uploaded the non-washed out version for comparison. Thanks Mr. Phil! =D

Whoa that looks sick Mock! Really nice, and I concur on the bioluminescence part... that stuff is awesome. Great figure and everything... just one compositional thing I'd like to mention. When I first glanced at it, it was hard to discern the relationship of the arm with the flipper thing and the torso... the transparency threw me off a bit. If the arm was placed just a little bit to the right of the body as to be able to see the torso contour, I think the pose would read better.

Hell though, that's a pretty big movement to do on just a noob's critique, and it's not really a big issue, so I wouldn't sweat it. Just maybe something to think about in the future.

But seriously man, your stuff is getting RIDICULOUS good. Keep it up.

Nice work so far. Bioluminescence is a pretty cool thang, and you implying it nicely.
If your having issues with wonky anatomy, some reference will do you allot of benefit. Id say leave the non reference work for non portfolio work. What ever possible to make the best image you can to ensure yourself a spot at the atelier.
Looking forward to seeing the further details.
    All the best.

really sweet! have to agree about the arm though. I think it'd look better if it stretched out almost in a straight horizontal line. oh and also maybe give her ass a little more direction. like a line parallel to the shoulders only further down.

Went back to this for the first time in a couple of weeks. Expanded the canvas to include more of the front guy, re-drew the entire front figure and fixed the head so that it's leading the turn.

Just blocking things in and getting a feel for possible colors and such. Lots to fix, lots to do.

Eight days til portfolio #2 goes in. Whooooo.

Decided that I didn't like all of the bright BG crap. Blocking in some details so I can remove the sketch and smooth things out later.

Well, I have most of the stuff done. I have the dragon picture and one more that I need to finish before it goes in, but there are about 6 other pieces and a few pages of sketches and studies that I haven't posted in here that will be submitted for that as well. I want to make sure I get one in at least every two months, partly to keep myself motivated to keep working as much as possible and partly to be persistent, haha.

I definitely like the toned down BG more than what you had before. Better mood. The composition and basic shapes are looking pretty good so far, though the foreground dragon's front legs are bothering me. I'm having trouble distinguishing which joints bend in which directions. Also, are you planning to add some nice translucent glow to the wings?

toning down the colors is definitely a good move. drop in some random hotness here and there to make it pop and you'll be much happier than if you saturated the shit out of everything. a lesson i'm very slowly learning.

have you tried expanding the canvas to be cinema wide-angle? might look gay, might look awesome.

    anyway, keeeep at it.

Just some more anatomy stuff done from photos. Working my way through the book between working on dragons. The one on the right isn't nearly finished, but I ran out of time for tonight. Ohwell~ The deadline for that picture is tomorrow, and I can't wait to be done with the thing.

Update on that. Starting to flesh things out a bit more. I expanded the canvas sides like Josh suggested and I like the look. Didn't like the second dragon being there, so now we're down to one. So much to do tomorrow.

The composition and colour scheme are far better in the newest version. There's a couple of things I'm not sure about though -

    - The head going into the dark side of the wing. This makes it blur into the wing shape and brings that wing forward, when it needs to look further back to line up with the other wing.
    - The front legs - obviously with an imaginary creature you can go in any direction with the anatomy so there's no right way to do these, but it's hard to see how the dragon would use those legs comfortably. I'm mostly thinking this because of how high and stiff the shoulder joint seems to be, and the joints make it seem like there's two 'elbow' joints in those legs. You don't need to re-invent the wheel, but I think it'd really help if you make a few small changes to this area that just make it clearer how the dragon is built and moves.

Blargh. That little contest thing that the dragon picture was for made the deadline noon instead of midnight. Dunno if I'm going to bother finishing the thing now, but we'll see.

Time to go eat unhealthy food, drink alcohol, and pretend I know why schools close for this holiday.

Scrapped the dragon. I don't think the finished product would be worth the time it will take to finish it. Or that I would learn enough to make it worthwhile, either. Thanks for the comments and crits on it. Sorry that they ultimately went to waste. =( Instead I'm moving on to some indoor environments. I'll have some thumbnails to post tonight.
