Oh... well sorry Carrie...
Just ONE thing. There are tons of chicks in here and as fun as it is to draw sexy ladies, sadly most of the market is based around over-testosterone-filled warriors and brutes. How about some dudes?

I think I'm going back to daily updates. Otherwise at the end of the week I go through these piles of crap sketches and can only stomach posting a few of them.
Cast drawing WIP which I will probably scrap since I've done it rather, uh... incorrectly. I read the Bargue book, or part of it, after doing this, and I think this is beyond saving. And various sketches from anatomy practice last week. Mostly from Anatomy for the Artist by Sarah Simblet.
the face on that cast is pretty good. something that really helps me is literally walking up to the cast and eyeballing it from different angles. feel around the face and try to understand what is happening, rather than see it. some days i spend nearly as much time an inch from the cast as i do an inch from my paper.
also, i'm not sure about the bargue technique, all things considered. i think you could benefit much more from churning out tons of anatomy and value studies, rather than spending weeks on one exceedingly complex game of the connect the dots, you know?
anyway, you're still making great progress. keep at it!

It's all about how you look at it; If you see bargue excersise's as "a complex game of connect the dots" that is what you get out of it. But if you treat it as a set of drawings and practices set out by two master artists to teach the foundations of art - Patience, accurate drawing, and value then that it what you will recieve. Everything is about how you perceive it![]()
Regardless, he brings up a good point, always accompany studies with more studies. Good on you for the anatomy studies but get more notes on that PAPER! Your mind will absorb it better if you have notes on the page with the drawings. Plus you must use the newly acquired knowledge that DAY, if you don't use what you have learned within hours it can simply vanish and you wasted time that you will never get back. This means finished pieces from imagination. Push them to completion, then look at what is weak and then study it! The fastest progressing artists are the ones that mix studies and FULLY realized pieces. Check out you're homie DanielC, Studies + Finished work= Zomg i want your babies.
Always refine, refine art, refine how you perceive, but the most important refine how you LEARN!
yaaay daily updates yaaay

I just think you could push your color contrast a bit more, keep it out of the chalky realm. Maybe I pushed it too much, my monitor is out of whack and I can never tell. Anyhow, try using tools like color balance and selective color (using mostly just highlight, midtones and shadow) to push your color temperatures. Mooooooooooo, hope that makes some sort of sense...
schweeet stuff boss ! http://conceptart.org/forums/attachm...1&d=1240247727 <---thats looking awesome. Sarah simblet's book is badass too
anyways, back to making shoes for a penny a day in the boiler !
That book is awesome, keep tackling it! =0 Go Mock goooooooooooo aaaaaaaah
Ah, cool. I'm gonna do some anatomy studies myself..

Cool stuff, I was digging the illustrations and characters and stuff more than the studies, but whatever works I guess, as long as the studies feed into the work. Studies look great though, aside from the broken wrist![]()

really nice studies, you're on the right track! woo woo
Blargh blargh blargh, family stuff (the good, if distracting, kind). Flying out this afternoon and won't have scanner, internet, or computer access until I get back on May 9th. So there should be a slew of sketches from impending 12 hours car and plane rides. If there's not, call me a lazy asshole and shoot me in the kneecaps.

Really nice work; 5 stars from me. The sad-looking girl in the armor especially is just gorgeous.
OHGODMYKNEECAPS.
Naaaaah. I've been drawerin'. I finally got internet access here (at least until tomorrow) but still no scanner. I've been focusing on drawing from memory and working on some more original, finished pieces. I have a bajillion sketch pages to upload when I get back. Genome, I followed your advice and started applying all of this studying to more finished and original sketch work. I'm having fun with the results.
In the mean time, here's a WIP. I don't really ever paint much outside of humans/environments, so I thought I'd try my hand at some avian/dragon creatures for someone on DA. Still in sketchy positioning time. There will be another one in the background blah blah blaaaaaah.
If you give that cast study up, I hope you will do another one, I really like looking at those^^ Also the few anatomy sketches there are pretty good, keep up the good work
-E
I'll definitely do another one. I ordered an actual cast that I can set up in my room when I get back home. I really enjoyed working on the first one, but I've gone about to very wrong and I think it's a bit beyond repair, haha.
wooo hot studies. :] mmm makes my mouth moist

Alright looking SWEET. Now, I am digging this latest dragon piece. You may have just cropped the edges of the piece, but if not the composition is slightly lacking. Show the entire dragon in the foreground, It seems like it will be the focal point of the illustration. Showing only bits and pieces of the focal point of a picture is like going to a strip joint and the main dancer shows you her ankle. Give all of the dragon to the viewer and use it to establish dynamic's and interest in the whole picture.
cool horns on that one. Perspective on head is profile while the rest is coming pretty straight on.

Is that dragon piece for the contest that =Kilaras on DA is holding. I was thinking about entering it. Anyways your piece looks sweet so far, I can't wait to finish product !!!!!!
Critiques on my work always welcome!!

Yo - looking pretty good - I suggest spending some extra time and care on those anatomy studies - get them looking phenomenal, since the amount of care you put into them will help you remember the info you're absorbing.
I know the purpose of bargue drawing exercisesI was more speaking of where she is currently working from. In my opinion, it is more beneficial to churn out a shit ton of general foundation studies in the weeks it takes to finish a single bargue exercise, you know?
They have their time and place, of course, but I think an aspiring concept artist can better benefit from other training.

Dragon is looking good. Something I've found really helpful right now is doing a kind of "restart" with the information you've already stated in the image. Like, try flattening the image, throw it above a white background layer and drop it's opacity to about 25%. That will leave you with an overlay of the general composition, but light enough that you can work over it easily. Then grab a standard round with size/opacity set to brush pressure and go over it as though you're inking a pencil sketch. You can dedicate all of your time to nailing the contour lines to define the shapes, but you have established silhouettes to work over. Otherwise you have to worry about light, rendering, values, shapes, forms, etc right out of your head and all at once. It helps me a lot with short-pose figure drawings, so I thought I would pass it along.
Keep at it!
