Okay, I've been trying to do something for this Daily Sketch [1920's-ERA MAN SEES SOMETHING NIGHTMARISH BY THE STREET LAMP]

Well, I figured out quickly enough that I couldn't even do the buidling...not really a dynamic view, but If I can't do this then going onto something from an extreme point of view might not help me learn anything at all - that is if I don't know how to do it plainly first...right?

Anyhow, it's supposed to be like it is in 3...not an above sort of view like the others. I was having my friend help me with it over MSN; She said it might be that you wouldn't see the back of the alley, so I tried in 6, but it just looks wide and blocky. I'm trying to make the alley very long and slender.

-Edit- Is it because 6 is way too short, or too wide?

The anatomy in your gesture drawings seem quite off.
In all of them the head is too small.
It is great that you are doing them.
Try to look at some books that break down basic anatomy
so you can catch your self when it happens in the future.

Mm, they are all quite horrendous I know. I'm fixing to gorge myself on this to see if it'll help me improve.

Mmkay...so here is something from The Human Machine The Anatomical Structure & Mechanism Of The Human Body by George B. Bridgman, or the first book from the thread in the link in my above post...

-Edit- Also some posemaniacs practice from a second ago. :3 I tried to make the heads a bit bigger but they feel too big to me. :/ Not to mention that everything else is messed up about the body, but I'm going to try to work hard on that.

Are you puting down any basic shapes, underlying structure, guidelines in your figure drawings?

With the images, I can't tell, BUT I'm guessing no. Get some of the basic large areas and forms correct first and the rest will work alot better.

Okay, I tried to do what you said though I'm not sure if I really understand. I think they're marginally better but maybe that's just me playing tricks on myself. Also finished each one very very quickly...so thank you. :3 I'll at least be able to practice more with less time now. Also the one to the far right is very messed up. XD

Hi Pearscrow, wecome to CA.
First off, SEVANS made a comment about creating an underlying structure. I just want to clarify and explain what it is, because it is the most important step. Before you start drawing the details and the bulk of your figure, start with something simplier, like lines and basic geometric shapes to create a skeleton. For example: A circle for the head or a box shape for the torso.
When you have created this skeleton, you'll now be able to add details easialy. This technique will help with proportions and will help you see the figure in three dementions. I promise, when you learn this, you'll see fast improvments.
Secondly, take your time with these sketches. You will improve faster if you take it slow, spend some time to fix errors, add details and shading.
Thirdly, just have some fun!

Gah, I'm really sorry that I can't scan anything (freakin' Vista) and I hope to go to my Dad's work sometime to scan in my sketches of unsuspecting classmates and portraits. I wish I could show you guys.

Anyway, um, how exactly do you do a portrait? A good one, I mean...like, you know, the kind that captures who they are and their personality, I want to know how to do that.

Thanks Ewing, your advice is so useful for when I sketch in real life! You have no idea. But I'm still a little stuck on people I'm afraid.

Yes I do. Why, have you seen my stuff on an oekaki, or recognize the program that made some of it?

I recognize the ShiPainter work. Believe me, I've been seeing a lot of this stuff for two years, so, haha. I have a few tips, now that I know you use it. You should lay down base colors with pen, then go in with waters. If you go straight in with waters otherwise it'll look very white-ish. Also, consider using layers for sketching, then putting colors underneath.

Thank you for the pen tip, I do that sometimes with the pencil (like on the doll and the hair in the head/shoulders), but other times I don't, and I think it shows clearly in the middle of the arm with the hand holding the doll.

Also, I guess this'll sound a little odd, but I've never done layers before in any program. I'll try when I start drawing tomorrow, though. Thank you for the suggestion.

Besides that, you should also consider doing a back ground.


;] Layers are pretty simple, and are pretty staple to drawing, at least for me. Open layers and select the top layer. Sketch and set the opacity at about 60%. Lay down base colors beneath it, on layer 1 or 2; if you're going to use waters, you'll probably have to do the background first, then work your way to the foreground, because there'll be white excess if you do the background on a layer below your subject.

You shouldn't be scared of anything; I'd suggest probably getting a reference/photo you've taken and try to copy that?

Eh, the only thing you need to know is that you can't have colors on more than one layer with water. The white excess looks really weird.

Hehe, yep. I used to use it all the time but not so much anymore. Anyway, I'll take note and actually try to do some right now with the perspective studies, however I'm not sure what you mean by form, can you clarify?
