This modeling air-dry clay cracks and false apart once it's dry. Is there anything that can be done to prevent this?

I don't really work with air-dry clay, but Ilaekae's questions are good ones. Air dry clays shrink, and if it's too thick or if there are armatures underneath, cracks will develop. Also, plaid underwear might retard your creativity skills.
