Moleskine Mural: Project OZ Update Dec 1st 08

They say that the 3rd time is the charm, and hopefully for me it will be. This is the 3rd time Ive started a skecthbook thread. Im hoping to stick witht his one till the bitter end.

I guess I'll start with the namesake of this thread. I got this idea to turn a Japanese fold out moleskine (60 zig zag pages 3.5x5.5 in.) into one long continuous piece of work. Every page should flow somewhat into the next. I started this in August and I hope to have the ink and pencil done by December, so in terms of skill there should be shifts that are reflected in the work. I have about 10 pages left. Then I'll scan everything hi-res into PS and have a crack at painting it up. A few of these are some what old, as Ive gone past what you see here. EX. The guy who comes after the trex is entirely done. I'll try to get some newer scans up later this week.

tmyohlaing: Thanks, Im taking figure drawing classes right now actually. I'd post up the work but its too big for my scanner and I dont have a digital scanner. I can do some digital studies though.

I was testing out some new brushes here. And some pieces from this summer, I revisit them from time to time in order to tweak those things that need tweaking.

Almost forgot to post these up. These scans are now where near as nice as 'the first ones here (my home scanner is shit and killed most of the marker work I put into these as well as alot of my lines), but they'll have to do till I can get some scanning done at work.

i'm a big fan of this mural thing.. i wonder if doing something like this would get me into landscapes and backgrounds a bit more... i tend to avoid them.. i can't wait to see where this goes!

@DoubleThink: Thanks, I feel over the past few months Ive been getting vrey comfortable with my inking work. Hopefully this is just the beginning with my fun with inks.
@amarryth: Happy your interested in where this is going. I really wish I could post up one long continous jpg... I definitely recommend trying this out for yourself. [I]ts really got me thinking about things in a widesceen setup. I can only imagine what it would do for you and your great work.

A while ago a friend and I were leaving work, and we began to discuss Hollywood and it's incessant remakes. The conversation drifted to The Wizard Of OZ, and we started to discuss what would our vision of OZ be... Long story seen everyone has done and seen a dark OZ, but what about a very... fucked up OZ. So I started redesigning all the OZ characters with a drug culture theme. Each character (save a few) has an addiction and there addiction has impacted them all differently.

The basic idea is that OZ is in a state o disrepair due to Dorthy having a rather unfortunate mental collapse. A drug called Ozen (basically pure unfiltered magic) has crept into the land and boy is it addictive. I've worked out most of the characters in my head. Ozen effects each character differently. Some of these differences will be based on real world addictions.
Two that I'm working on now are The Scarcecrow (Its a play on words! HAH Im so funnny!...) and Dorthy. The Scarcecrow's addiction has manifested itself more or less has a crystal meth type of problem. Hence the gaping holes in his cloth face, the cheeck bones, etc. I still have alot more to do to him but he's the furthest along right now


Dorthy... Well she aint right in the head. Her psyche is pretty fractured, and her personality has been radically change by a forced stay in a good ol fashioned sanitarium. Tons more work to do on Dorthy.

Looking good so far, and I can imagine that it feels a lot better to look through the actual book

Keep doing your studies! For your environments I'd suggest looking at some references and start thinking about which colors to use and how they act in and out of light =)

@RevisetheMethod- Thanks, I can tell you it feels wonderful to take up a long table and just fold the entire thing. This is one of the more fulfilling things I've done recently. Thanks for the environment tip, I'll start trying to see how other go about it.

@Amarryth- Thanks you! Project OZ ia long term thing but, I plan to pick up the pace in a few weeks. Just have to get some projects for school out of the way first.

Sorry its been so long since I've updated. Im currently trying to wrap up some projects for school. Unfortunately my University has no illustration major, so ventured down the path of graphic design. It is what it is. Which means sometimes I have to spend time doing school work instead of fun work. Not saying it aint fun. It has its moments. SO in the meantime here's a quick sketch (conte crayon) from a few nights ago.

I really need to update, schools been kicking my ass and eating my time up pretty badly. Anywho some maya work for my 3d modeling and animation class.

This one (Space Squid) is pretty much done. I'm trying to texture him but UV's are ridiculously complicated. He's fully rigged though.



And this guy... Well he's still coming along I have a couple more weeks to put work into him before the semester ends.
