As for critique:
You already seem to know how to improve. You mentioned that you ordered an anatomy book, and that is a great way to begin. I like George Bridgeman and Andrew Loomis better than Hogarth, but thats just my opinion.
I recommend you draw from life, and often. Building a visual vocabulary is important.
Keep in mind that when you are hatching, you should be using your hatchmarks to build the form. When you hatch against the form, like in your self portrait, your drawing will appear flat. An example would be the straight lines across your sp's forehead and cheeks. Put some curves in there.
