Apparently, he was taught under George Bridgeman and didn't brutalize his students as badly.

He taught at the Art Students League in New York.

Basically, I just want to know your impressions of the videos and his ability as an instructor....on those videos.

His books (which as I understand are pretty much word-for-word from his lectures) are pretty damn good. Just as an FYI and all.

My aunt studied under him. I looked at one of his books (didn't have time to read it). I'm sure it's got great information, but I didn't think there were enough images. It doesn't go into anatomy so much as proportions.

I've seen a few of those videos in my anatomy class. There is a lot of good information in there, but his drawing skills are/were a little lacking. Pretty much you can get the same info in these videos from his books. Might even be better since you won't have to rewind it if you miss something.

If you have seen any of Glen Vilppu's videos, the Hale movies are just like that. The videos here are a black and white recording of one of his class lectures. Sound wasn't all that great and Hale must have been a heavy smoker because he had these sporadic smoker coughs that grossed me out.

Personally, I thing you’re better off going with the Vilppu videos and possibly getting R.B. Hale’s books. For one, the cost will be less and you’ll be able to buy more of them.

I’ve been keeping an eye out for Hale’s lectures on DVD at a reasonable price. If I come across anything, I’ll pass it along here.

he teaches anatomy primarily as it is in reality and is more educator than artist (wich is what wants in recource) his drawing can appear skewed ( as Talbot refers to ), but bare in mind he is drawing them from the ground with a 3 foot stick with a marker on the end, craning his neck on a white board to a giant lecture hall (ouch!), and doesn't have the opportunity to view it from a distance...

his emphasis is on the science. and he is considered the worlds foremost anatomist for the arts ...or has been in his prime...a world wide draw.

if you need anatomy info ...he is on the short list. personally despite his odd drawings i found him the next step after one has exhausted the usefulness of Bridgeman

Hale does none of the work for you in abstracting structual forms
he gives you the facts (not his personal artistic interpretation, in the way a Hogarth or Bridgeman do )in a more medical light..than most.

to that point i suggest folks look for medical anatomy texts as well.

i was referring to his lecture drawings, that he draws while looking at from extremely oblique angles, at the end of a long, long stick. not his actual "Drawings" (As i believe is the case with any similar comments made in the posts here)

furthermore its clear that all here, that have seen his work are big fans of Hale.

i think the vids are great....hale's texts and these vids were the basis of all my art college anatomy courses...Bridgeman and Hogarth were frowned upon..and forbidden ...at the time i bristled at that fact...but now i believe i get it.

This just means you didn't get it and must go back to studying the books hardcore. "Master Class in Figure Drawing" and "Drawing Lessons from the Masters" are amazing, amazing books. Pretty much the best, to me. I'd kill to get my hands on his videos which are said to show him teaching a method of constructing a figure from scratch.

In the January 2006 issue of Drawing: American Artist, someone came across some of Bridgman's lecture drawings. They looked EXACTLY like the drawings in his book. Truly mind blowing! He did them the same way; looking up with a bit of charcoal at the end of a stick. I mentioned it here and included the image from the lecture. However, the image no longer appears and going to American Artist's website yields no picture. Can't find it on Google either. Gonna have to dig through my old issues to find and scan it.

(I'm not saying one artist is better than the other, it's more of a testament to both artists' abilities. I'd kill to have a 1/10 of either their abilities.)

agreed, however i do think HALE is better as an educational model.
