Hi, just starting up a sketchbook for the first time. Please feel free to critique.

Glad to see your sketchbook! keep posting!! and you gotta scan some of the stuff you did in the stores in so we can all see. Scanners are around 50 bucks or cheaper.

Here are some 1 hour speed paintings I've been doing to improve my environmental art. They are master's studies, so be aware its not my own concept:





This one is just a sketch, I will paint later, but I thought the sketch turned out well.

The cliff in the background of that second environment is looking mighty fine. I know it's a speedy, but I'd love to see the rest of the image finished.

On the figure in the last one the left art looks kind of broken, and the cheekbone/zygomatic arch look off, but it's a fine start. The rest of her dress would probably billow out more too, judging by the rest of the drapery on her. Looking forward to seeing your progress on this one, amigo!

I've seen the original work of that last study there, by Christophe Vacher. The finished version is quite mind-blowing.

It is really amazing, you can find it in a Barron's art book on painting fantasy landscapes.

Ok so, as you can see, it has been awhile since I've posted.


I have been having a little trouble with motivating myself to draw lately, something which has not been a problem for me for a long time. I have a good job, making artwork for a living, but it's mostly 3D art, and I think I have been down on my own 2D stuff for such a long time now, that it was literally making it difficult for me to pick up a pencil even for fun.

So in order to remind myself that drawing is in fact fun, I decided yesterday that I will do an exercise. I used to fill up notebooks doing this before I decided I wanted to make art my profession, but I thought people might look down on the practice as not "serious art" when I started art school at the Guildhall.

The challenge to myself is to draw one Marvel comics character everyday, with some kind of new twist on their costume, until I am either doing comics or concept art full time for a living (preferably Marvel comics!) or until I have run through the entire gamut of Marvel characters, which numbers well into the thousands. Because of my busy work schedule, and because I really prefer to do pencils than anything else, most of these will be sketches, but I hopefully will have time and the inspiration to do a few paintings as well.

I have a friend, (you know who you are ) who keeps badgering me to post on my blog. She is a remarkable artist and she is always posting. On her blog, on CA.org, everywhere and anywhere. I wish I had her internal dedication, but I have found that I don't. All I can do is make things fun for myself, and this is my lame attempt at that. My hope is that if I force myself to post though and do something EVERY single day, I will gradually get better at things I desperately need to improve, like anatomy, poses, balance, line quality, action, and design.

At some point, if my characters improve enough I will probably move on to doing panels of my own comics or something of the like. But you know. Baby steps.

I do want to improve my sense of design, so each and every character will have some new element to their look or costume. It will probably be small at first, just little redesigns of the costume. Eventually if this goes well I will try to move on to making Juggernaut steampunk, or Wolverine from the 25th century, or whatever, but for now again baby steps...

Please feel free to critique, to give pointers, and to let me know if you think I am copping out by choosing such a limited set of characters. As I said I used to fill up sooo many sketchbooks doing this when I was just doing it all for fun. The hope is to recapture that spirit of fun, but also to get better.

So in the spirit of Independence Day, I give you Marvel's grand-daddy of them all, Captain America.

the characters are looking real good btw.. love how clean the lineart is (or theclean/rough ratio) They also have plenty of weight and personality... will be looking out for more

Here is Arana. Not too much of a change to the costume, just a little web pattern to the shirt. Oh also imagine the "n" has one of those little Spanish accents, an enya, or whatever, over it.

Thanks guys! Please feel free to critique if you see things that could be improved. Things I know I have trouble on include anatomy of the limbs - hands arms, legs, feet. As well as poses and making stuff look dynamic. Any tips on improving this stuff is greatly appreciated.

So, here's the deal. My hard work may be paying off. I got to spend the night on an awesome work project, which meant I only had a few minutes to draw my character for the day. So I kind of cheated and did the easiest character on earth to draw: Doop.
