I'm going to update this thing at least once a day. Maybe twice now that I'm freelancing instead of slaving away along with the other 9-5 web design demons.
Two environment speed paintings from yesterday:
-: [ sketchbook | sour.org ] :-
Just started this one. Random brush test that ended up showing possibility. I'm trying to branch out into new scenes and color schemes. My characters tend to recede into the background, so I'm trying to force these guys to pop out a bit.
That skeez in the foreground is fairly fugly. I'll have to give her a good work over.

Two quick ones. The first is an update to the prior post. I'm the kind of guy that can't go further on a painting until I get the focal point down, so I worked over the girls face and put in a dead of night sort of rim light to add some drama. Second is just a couple of anatomy speed studies (15ish minutes each). The first one might make an alright finished painting.
Feel free to offer any suggestions, critiques, whatever. I haven't really nailed down what I'm going to do for the fore ground on that first painting.

Thank ya. I'm just starting to learn theory proper (color, perspective, value, etc) and its going pretty OK. It's pretty humbling to come to this site and realize how much you suck. heh

Just a quick update. Two environment practice paintings and the current progress on the painting I've been dabbling with daily. I'm pretty happy with the progress on it thus far.

Something a little different.
Here is the full album artwork for a local band that I occasionally work with, Matgo Primo. Sonically, the album is all over the place. Thematically, it comes together pretty well- well enough that basing the artwork on the themes resulted in a design that the band felt properly represented their sound. Good enough for me ;P
In order below is:
1) front cover
2) back cover
3) front + back, spread
4) front cover, reverse side
5) back cover, reverse side (cd tray)
6) der cd
Hope you dig.

There's some really good stuff here. I'd say your anatomy could use a bit of practice, but your landscapes are gorgeous, and the cd design is so very nice.
Crit: The inside cover, with the face upchucking, doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the design. You may want to tone that page down, less is always more. Rather than having something crazy going on with every part of the case, a less busy page thrown into the mix might calm everything down and let your eyes rest.
Thats my input. Sweet stuff.
hah. i just started drawing landscapes (with ref) a few weeks ago and i've been painting characters (from memory) forever. pretty good sign that i need to pull out the old anatomy books and relearn a few things.
very true on the cd design comment. i picked up on that, but not until after i had it approved by the band. so i threw together that cdtray illustration, which used a bit of a human figure to try and pull everything together. you are correct, though.
thanks for the insight!

Just a couple updates from this morning. The first is a speed painting based on the awesome Japanese street mag "FRUiTS" (her arm was hidden like that). The second a detail shot of my ongoing (slowgoing) current painting.

Two more for today. I figured since I quit my 9 to 5 to paint, I might as well do it ;P
The first is a generic ancient priest, with his hair flowing off into a smoky trail. The second is a screen shot of the Ewok village, lazily painted up quick like. Not happy with that one. I'm going to flatten it and paint over.

Love the graphics here.

That's weird, I was just looking at your sketchbook yesterday and now, here you are. You've got some pretty interesting color schemes going with your stuff.

Nice stuff you've got here.
Thank you, sir.
This is a definite work in progress, but I think its off to a good start. Eventually, she's going to have tattoos of various flowers and what not that gradually pull off of her arm and into foliage, which frames the picture.
I'm working on a conceptual world where tattoos are lo-tech weaponry. More next post..

Whoah! You know I'm definitely loving your sense of colors and your bold color choices!
Great work!![]()

Thanks, man. I don't really know what I'm doing with color just yet, so I dive on in and don't worry about how crazy things might end up- then adjustment layers pull things back into line if it gets too hairy.
Photoshop is really an unfair advantage in art self education. heh

Oh yeah, I know what you mean in that regard.
That's why sometimes I like to sketch in pen so I can become more confident with my sketching/drawing.
Photoshop is like a pencil, you can erase mistakes. But with a pen the line you put down is there forever.
if that makes sense. heheh

dude, i give you high five for your imagination usage. as for the whole critique thingy goes, im not gonna say but i guess i have to. just work on getting the darks dark and the lights light because then you object will cease to exist without composition of depth and feeling. i only hope i have help you out just a little bit, best of luck man. Oh keep posting and ill keep checking up on ya![]()
Zoroko: I did the same thing for years (only drew with pen). It had the downside of making sure I kept making the same mistakes heh. Since going back to the trusty pencil, I've been making much more progress.
l0stinth0ughts: Can you explain this part more in-depthly:
I'm here to learn all I can, but I was confused by how you worded that. Explain for my simple brain!just work on getting the darks dark and the lights light because then you object will cease to exist without composition of depth and feeling.

Looking through, that makes sense. I desaturated a few of these from just a bit all the way to the point of just blacks and whites, and some of them completely lost their form.
For the most part, I understand the technicalities of a proper value range and how that relates to definition of form, but I get caught up in details and totally forget to apply that theory in a broader sense. I need to make a checklist of artistic principles and tape it to my laptop :P
Any way, thanks for the input!
-: [ sketchbook | sour.org ] :-
Drew up this generic naked girl to speed up my character development. Tried out a quick outfit and things went pretty ok. Going to do a side pose next, then a guy.
Neither of these are finished, by the way. I just got anxious and wanted to give it a go ;P
-: [ sketchbook | sour.org ] :-
Getting ready to launch a new web site. Thought I would throw the teaser splash up here, since it features a formerly-sexy, dead-eyed zombie chick. Just a speed painting, no ref, to serve as placeholder.
-: [ sketchbook | sour.org ] :-
Here is another quick practice with the anatomy doll I painted up. I definitely need to refine the original painting and, when painting over with ideas, pull up some references. I did this one with no references, and she looks like some hipster spider woman from the LA goth scene. GEEEHHH
I'm going to to tackle this again tomorrow. I'm not satisfied with this one.
-: [ sketchbook | sour.org ] :-
Not too much time for painting this week. Had a bunch of web design work to catch up on. Here are a couple quick figure studies I did, though. Her hands look pretty terrible, but I was trying to turn out as many thumbs as possible in my few minutes. I'm thinking its about time to do some more hand studies.

I'm pretty determined to get at least remotely competent with armor. I've been drawing it from reference and things are starting to make a little more sense.
Drew this guy in my sketchbook, took a photo with my trusty nikon d70 (ghetto scanner) and gave him the photoshop rub down. I might finish him some time, but I doubt it. I learned what I was hoping to from this. I didn't bother even messing with the shoddy anatomy on the lower half, which is why he looks like a G.I. Joe figure.

I've set up a schedule for myself to (hopefully) facilitate a progress boon. This afternoon was urban landscape practice, which I totally suck at.
Spent about 45 minutes on this painting. I'm going to spend another 45 on it tonight and post the results.
-: [ sketchbook | sour.org ] :-
didn't quite make it back to that urban landscape last night.
did do a quick painting of some random soldier kinda guy.
