    Star Trek Art

Hey everyone, I'd really appreciate some help with this image. I'm trying to figure out where I've gone wrong with their faces - Kirk (the one on the right) looks particularly unrealistic.

It's okay if you don't know who they are, I'd love opinions from a purely aesthetic viewpoint too. Feel free to rip to shreds!

    Thanks a lot everyone!

Kirk's got some pretty narrow shoulders considering the size of his head and the width of his neck.

    ALRIGHTY!

    here's what i see:

it seems that what you're doing here is creating more of caricatures than actual portraits. Due to your question on realism i'm assuming you're going for more of a portrait quality, yes? HONESTLY, i'm not feeling that leonard nimoy's portrait is all that accurate, but more that his portrait is much more identifiable (especially as spok (SP?)) than a younger William Shatner.

Much of this caricature quality is due to your promising colors and really quite nice painting quality when compared to your lack of realistic anatomy. Since generally caricature artists are indeed accomplished painters and they CHOOSE to defy anatomy for more of a cartoony quality, this indeed feels more like a caricature.

so let's cover some of that anatomy. I agree with the poster before me, Kirk's (or Shatner's... whatever!) shoulders are ENTIRELY too narrow in comparison to his neck and Head. Honestly, it feels as though you simply made the head too large. Nimoy's arm is going to appear really awkward when you're through with the painting of it, due to the fact that the foreshortening is HEAD ON, rather than putting it to a slightly side view. When foreshortening, head on is something to stay away from unless you REALLY know what you're doing or REALLY need it. Their noses are too long, their mouths both feel really low as a result. Not that i'm an expert on star trek or anything, but check the width of nimoy's mouth, it might be wider. Go to a mirror and make kirk's pose, see how it looks. something is awkward in there, i'm feeling a large part of it is due to the fact that his arm is just too thin. This is according to the size of his head, everything in anatomy is based on the size of the head, so it's very very important.

i'm sure there are other things people more knowledgeable can tell you, but i'm going to stop there with some things for you to consider and look at.

keep painting, but study life MORE. The painting quality is bounds and leaps above your anatomy, and i feel it holds you down.
