Wicked style, not sure about subject matter though..
yeah! love andrews stuff
I don't get it....
Maybe 4000 dollars looks too much from your perspective but if you look how much money earns somebody like Britney Spears,Lady Gaga or average athlete then compare 4000 dollars is really nothing for what this guy does. This guy probably work as hard as anybody and he is good at it so he deserve decent money.I agree that life sometimes can be unfair but that is not the case here.Sorry for bad English.
And the cost for each painting is split 50/50 so if a painting is $4000, only $2000 goes to the artist.
May still seem like a lot? Well thing about what an 'average' living salary is. US median income is around 50,000. For an artist to make a living SOLELY on his painting, with each painting selling or $2k, that means he has to sell 25 paintings a year. That's a lot. And that's not including studio and material costs and massive student loans and all the little things you need as an artist.
When you factor in how difficult it is to get a solo show in the first place, how difficult it is for that show to sell out, and how easyit is for your work to slip in and out of popularity... You realize that $4000 a painting is not that much at all. So next time you are at a gallery with red dots next to paintings that are $10000 or more don't assume the artist is living large, because if he has a family and 'normal people' accouterments then he's supplementing (or more like subsidizing) his art with day jobs and teaching and all that.
When you understand the reality of things with fine art you reaaaaaaaally aren't doing it for the money.
This is why when you are around art people you hear about 'community' and networking. It's not just to get ahead as individual. In many respects it's a kindof support group. Just like how it's easier to survive on a deserted island if you are not alone, so to is the case in fine art.

The insult is you don't seem to understand this guy has earned the money he's asking for. He has a unique talent and has worked very hard and sacrificed for it, just like you are doing now.
You'd understand how an artist could charge four grand if you had to worry about paying back loans to Art Center, maybe starting a family, traveling across the world to sell his work and the investments he has to make to keep progressing. Let's face it his work is probably a worthy investment, no different than precious metals.
his work is awesome!! And a lot more impressive than some 'fine' artists who are living large for making kitsch marketable art
Your insult was the fact that you phrased your comment in such an utterly deragatory manner, indicating that you somehow was equal to the artist in question: which you simply aren't. Seeing your sketchbook, it's clear that you have a lot of focus on technical ability.. You probably rate other works of art by their technical achievment or shortcomings. There are other kinds of qualities in art, which you are obliged, as an artist, to look for and discover.

hey ivory, why don't you just tell us your real name so we can know when you have a solo show in LA with $4000 paintings
This thread should be renamed Ivory Oasis doesn't understand Andrew Hem.
Andrew Hem is a name I see linked in a lot of the blogs of California Visual Development art types. It looks like the guy takes his stuff seriously and I'd say it's a pretty nice thing to see him land some success from it. If you can get a painting of his today for $4k then I'd say it's probably a wise investment. I don't know if this guy is on a similar track as Jeff Soto or Jonathan Weiner but he might be and I'm guessing those guys are getting more than $4 grand a painting. I might be wrong but I think a few years ago Jeff Soto was getting $25 thousand.
