    (UPDATED) DRAGONHEART process...

So, here's a couple shots I mentioned I'd put up. This is the model used for scanning and paint reference in the movie Dragonheart. Not a good movie, but oh well. We made three identically painted hard copies (with wings) in the end. One for us, one to go to the set in Slovakia for lighting reference, and one to go to ILM where they scanned it and built what became the final cg puppet. Funny story I heard is that Dennis Muren at ILM nicknamed it "Tippetts Curse" because they thought we intentionally put a ton of detail in the model that would need to be made with geometry, thus making the puppet incredibly heavy. The truth was that I had no idea about cg modeling back then and just tried to make it look good. Anyway.

    face detail...

-thanks for the great comments you guys, it's great to hear that there are people out there that even remember that movie. Btw, Sean Connery got paid something like 15 million to voice that character. They set up a studio near a golf course in the Bahamas and recorded him between holes for a period of about 4 days. Nice to be a legend and get the legend treatment I guess.

Haha! Tippett's Curse in the flesh! A friend of mine animated on that show. I heard the geometry was so heavy, they had to load it in pieces or it would crash the computers.

That is one great looking model!

Hah, I think that Fozzybar wins for best quote...I think I want to use that for my signature file. It's nearly a Haiku!

"Many People, Various Art, but the same love...we meet here..."

Coro :Whataya saying holmes, I look old now!?:p

Chao : No, sorry man, didn't get to sculpt for that film. (See previous dino post!)

Jester : Sorry Jes', just didn't buy it as a period piece. Even though they shot it in an exotic location, it still seemed painfully hollywood. I also liked how Dennis Quaids accent sorta came and went, then went. Awesome. It's too bad they changed the script...originally there were supposed to be other dragons too. That woulda been nice.

No offense taken, it's just that it's one of my, hmmm, top 25 movies (it was one of the first DVDs I bought but I've seen it in cinema when it came out) and I couldn't understand that someone who had the pleasure to work on this film wouldn't like it. I mean, I wrote my M.A. thesis on the Arthurian legend in fantasy and I was sick fed up with Arthur and his guys when I had finished it (so I know that feeling) but by now I can read such stuff again - even with pleasure.

    :p
