Ooooo! The thick, chunky marks in the ground and sage brush along with the wet sky makes that western landscape a real dope drawing! I really admire your brush control.

a la bapsi: Thanks! I like the drawing in the first one but I like the mood in the second one.
    remmy: Thanks!
    BRINKMAN!: Thanks!
goran: Thanks! That means a lot to me. You are kicking some serious ass with your sketch book too!

I've been pretty busy lately and not had time to do much sketchbookin'. I've been spending time trying to work on my oil painting. You can check some of the results here. But I still need to give my sketch book some love so here are some recent doodles. Please make note the Ambush Bugs! Perhaps the greatest super hero ever to come out of the DC Universe!!!

wahey, update. i love the sorta 'old' feel of your character faces, there's something very classically cartoony about them, although they still look fresh. honestly, really nice lines all round man, love yer stuff.

Thanks Bhanu! I'm doing a lot of different stuff with oils trying to find a style and approach that I like. I think it'll take me a few years to get it really going on.

I should also say that some of the above doodles were strongly inspired by this dude. His style is freaking awesome!

    Hey there!

Sorry I haven't been posting. Fortunately it's because I've been working like crazy.

I've been going to this place called the Ubiquitous Bee lately to paint from life. And here are some of the results. I'm having a lot of fun trying to find a method of working with oils. So far it's been one of those mediums where things can get out of control very quickly if the foundation isn't right. I don't know what I'm talking about but like I said it's fun.

Beautiful colors, I like the cheekbone on that girl portrait! Your edges are less strong than when you draw with ink of course, but I still like it so far!

Mr. Skoda, I want to thank you for great explination of how to use this medium with more controll. I would like to hear anything you have to say about edge controll, in particular how to make a nice soft edge. Thanks again.

Started looking at this thread from the beginning and just as I'm getting wound up to dust off the WC's... you start dropping the oils and now I want to do that... The reds and blues in your skin tones make your figures SO inetersting and a guy has to be a badass of a drawer to have that much fluidity and still get all the parts in the right palce. Enjoying the SB, look forward to more...

BRINKMAN!: Hey Thanks! The second one looked a lot like the first one but I had some extra time at the end of the session and decided to work it some more. It looked better before I started blending everything. Right now I'm working on a Baseball video game for SCEA and I'm starting to work on my first professional comic book for Oni Press. It's a lot of fun stuff actually!

    enthombed: Thanks!

    DoubleThink: Thanks!

Clochette: Thanks for stopping by! I keep trying to get some nice contour lines going but I always end up painting over them. I'll get it someday.

    lufiamanaelf: Thanks!

MonkeYoakum: I don't really know what to tell you about edge control. It's different with every medium, I guess. There are lots of ways to get soft edges but I think they pretty much all boil down to starting with a hard edge and then blending. With oils, you just get a clean brush and run in along the edge you want to soften. With water colors you get a clean but wet brush and sort of mudge the paint around and let the edges mix. I hope that helps a little.

    Bill: Thanks!

Here are a few that I had up on my blog but forgot to post here:

still loving it all. for your next sketchbook, I recommend one of these (http://www.dickblick.com/zz118/69/). they are amazing for watercolor. The surface isn't as smooth as the moleskine, BUT because of that they take to watercolor extremely well. the pages warp enough to make them interesting but not too much. and the watercolors don't bleed through at all. nothing I've used has bled through yet.

it's seriously awsome. you need to try it.

Thanks for the tip Lufiamanaef!! Maybe I will try that next. I've seen those all over the place but I never picked them up because (and this will sound stupid) I didn't like the look of the elastic.

I've been working in one of these lately: http://www.moleskines.com/klmrl719.html And I'm really enjoying it. It's watercolor paper and so sturdy that I've been using oil paints in it. (I'll try to post an example later tonight.) The only thing I don't really like is how the pages are landscape.
