Concept: Hypo Capriate
The Hypo Capriate Species are small and excessively excited and nervous. Because of their small size they have a quick heart beat and their nervous system works in overtime, their constantly on alert mode running all over the place, left right, side to side, circles, up hill, down hill..they even try to run up trees some times though they often just fall and start running again haha.
Hypo Capriates use a unique quadruped/biped skeletal and muscular system that allows them to produce a very long stride for such a small creature. When they do slow down which isn't that often, only in times of sleep which is done standing up and only for 5 minutes twice a day, they stand on their two legs and the arms stretch in a backward state. They are vegetarians though they chase and eat their food as if it were alive because they don't like to sit around in one spot for too long. So they will run by and snatch a piece of a leaf and chew it on the GO...
They shit while running and they copulate with the male on the larger females back while she runs at an accelerated speed which works up the hormones. This is a sort of foreplay for the Hypo Capriates, they are hyperactive both day and night which helps keep their species alive even though they are small harmless critters that would ordinarily be prone to attack by most predators.

Concept: HyperBug


The Hyperbug received its misleading name from the first series of digital/video recordings from unmanned-probes on the northern continent of planet F4459. Their near-constant vibrating bodies seemed to indicate a dizzying metabolism, frantic personality or perhaps a form of natural defense to indigenous predators.

It was only decades later, when the first series of manned explorations of this planet, that they discovered a graceful creature that seemed to dance in the wind, almost like a manta ray with legs. It was initially thought to be a new species. The connection was later made that the creature was reacting to certain high pitches/frequencies of sound. This caused the erratic movements of the Hyperbug. They process the sound waves through a hyper sensitive sensor that is lodged inside a multi-orificed organ wedged between its upper wings and back

The early unmanned-robo-prodes and their anti-grav engines emitted high frequency noises that triggered the Hyperbugs to vibrate and run about in clusters. That is why all of the initial digital video footage and data was fuzzy and distorted. The automated cameras of the robo-probes simply could not keep up.

The final quirk to this strange creature is that they produce a near identical high pitch noise (emitted by the probes) during their mating season. Many scientists hypothesize that the unmanned robo-probes from decades past are directly responsible for the current disproportionate population of the Hyperbug. Unmanned robo-probes are currently banned from Planet F4459.

Additional note: This creature’s recent behavioral discoveries have prompted the slang “Doin da HyperBug” with adolescents and adults.

Concept: Multipede tempusfugit

On Planet Dilbert III, human colonists found perfect conditions to inhabit a fertile and uninhabited world. Also found some specimens of a creature they named Multipede tempusfugit, later known only as "What the...". They were rapidly adopted by humans as pets, due to their soft and multicolored coats and their calmness and docility. Unfortunately it was soon discovered about their mating habits too. Male multipedes had the hability to alter their movement through time. It could flow for them ten times slower than for anything else. It was an astounding evolutionary achievement, meant to reach as many females as possible in the short mating seasons.
What looked like the perfect pet changed suddenly to a hyperactive sexual frenzied creature moving in a dazzling blur of legs and tails creating havok all around him. After some frenetic weeks, humans freed the creatures, which by the way, were incredibly frustrated, as everything in their surroundings was soooo slow and boring...

Concept: Leaping Horn-tail
The Leaping Horn-tail have a breeding cycle that lasts from dusk till dawn, when they enter this cycle their adrenaline glands over produce causing a chemical reaction which sends them literally insane. They remain in this condition until they find a mate. There is a large gender imbalance in favour of the male which means that there is constant chaos in the Horn-tail forest dens. All night these hopeful creatures are leaping between trees, running up and down and shrieking their high pitched shrill throughout the forest.

The UU UU looks like a chicken and hates it. Normally the UU UU is super relaxed, but when someone calls him a chicken he becomes hyperactive, blows up his huaps and starts running like mad. The UU UU lays 2 to 7 eggs in october.

Concept:Fuga delirus
The main reason behind his ridiculously fast moving tentacles is to catch it's food, consistent of ants and other small insects. The ants for example, they get stuck to the fuga delirus' tentacles and are then ever so slowly devoured. It never runs in a strait line, but more often just spins around on top of an ant colony. Since the fuga delirus has no eyes it is still a mystery how it manages not to bump into objects while crawling around with such high speed. Scientists have mentioned that the creature might be highly sensitive to changes in the temperature and air, but this is just an assumption. When the fuga delirus is in rest it retires into the water. The rather bold and distinctive colors are warning colors, for the fuga delirus has a thin layer of poisonous sticky slime all over it's body.

Concept: Ovanoids
Ovanoids are little monkey-like aliens that grow 4 inches tall. Reproducing hermaphroditically, an Ovanoid never hatches from the safety of its birth-egg, which grows with the creature to maturity. Perhaps because of this extra padding, an Ovanoid can be particularily frenetic, active, and even reckless. It stays mobile inside its egg running like a hamster in its ball, bouncing it around, sometimes grabbing onto its umbilical tail and rolling the whole thing down a hill. Although the Ovanoid's anatomical functions are handled through its sophisticated umbilical connection to the outside world, an Ovanoid uses its mouth for a strange lexicon of high frequency vocalizations that range in sound from the buzz of a bee to birdsong.

These small creatures are in constant motion, they never stop. They eat small insects and other small creatures which they catch while moving. They copulate in motion and they give birth in motion. Everything what they do.... it happens in motion......

Concept:Lava Walker

This creature lives in volcanic areas. It crosses rivers and lakes of lava by quickly stepping over them. The Jesus lizard on steroids, of volcano's. Its wings can't give it flight, but are mostly used for some cooling. Most of the lift is do to the membrane between the legs catching the rising heat. If you ever experienced walking across hot sandy beach barefoot, you know that high step-in faster is better.Caught here with the highest speed camera.

Concept: Cantankerous Linkoot
Living in a land where high cliff faces are found every 5 miles for as far as the eye can see, this tightly-wound creature is adapted for extreme feats of vertical movement. It is omnivorous and with the amount of energy that it must consume to survive, this is an essential ability. Always on the move, up and down the sheer walls of it's world, the Linkoot is often seen but rarely caught up to.

Concept: Vortigen "Devil's Wheel"


The Vortigen are a strange creature indeed. Unlike most terrestrial organisms they possess two wheel structures which serve as their primary means of locomotion. Attached to each wheel structure are tightly corded muscle masses that function a bit like an axel for each of the wheels. However, the wheels do not spin freely around the axel musculature. Instead, the Vortigen propels itself forward similarly to a toy wind up car. The Vortigen lifts itself up briefly with its front limbs to provide clearance of the ground. Then it twists the axel muscle masses until they are wound to the maximum. It then sets itself it down and goes shooting wildly off in the intended general direction. However, once it starts it's journey it has little control over its fate and often veers wildly off course. This erratic behavior has earned it the nickname Devil's Wheel and observers should offer the Vortigen a wide berth.

[/b]Discovered on the desert plains of Anfetimeen 5, the Desert Thrummer survives off a diet of the stimulant-laden Benz Adreen plants, which are poisonous to most other wildlife.
The creature has adapted well to the open plains, with an expansive chest (for it's diminuitive size) a highly over-developed blood flow system and large nostrils to allow the intake and distrubution of oxygen. It's circulatory system is also found to be close to the animal's skin surface to allow for the rapid radiation of excessive heat from it's over-active metabolism, particularly in the enlarged ears.
The Desert Thrummer is considered a delicacy by the local indigenous races, particularly the Frenzy Dancers of Spahz, a nearby city.

Concept: Buzzsaw Woodpecker


The Buzzsaw Woodpecker started off innocently enough as an endangered species in lower Asia. A radical environmental group stole the last few from their 'imprisonment' in a protected zoo/habitat and let them free in the forests of western North America. What was not known is the effect that the sap from the native trees of the area would have on these creatures. The sap acted like a cross between a narcotic and viagra. Their breeding cycle has become non-stop and they now attack trees like locusts to get at the precious sap within. It has been documented that some of these new hybrid woodpeckers have pecked themselves until either they lose their plumage or die.
The American government has issued a shoot-first and ask questions later mandate when dealing with these creatures.

Hyeprialissiks

Mostly resides on sugar cane fields, the Hyeprialissiks are part of the Squamata (snakes, lizards etc.) Reptile family. These creatures are "addicted" to sugar and uses their short yet sharp teeth to grind the sugar cane. Once they have their fill of sugar, they enter this state of "trance" or hyperactivity called sugar rush. They leap and during mid-air, they coil themselves (much like a centipede does), allowing them to take form of a ball, and bounces in any direction. The armor that protects them is made of a rubber type of material, allowing them to bounce around the field. Also, they are capable of releasing poison through their back once they are in sugar rush. It is best to avoid these little creatures as they bounce around.

Your entry is a good example of "Better leave the bg blank than decreasinh the quality with a bad one". Don't want to sound harsh, just be careful about your decisions when composing an image. If something is not adding quality to the image than leave it

Voted for Ramixton. Wish more time had been spent to really flesh out the details and render it to more finished image, but sometimes there isn't time. However, that aside, in terms of design and body posture it felt more hyperactive than the other entries. And since this is concept art, if the image doesn't fit the brief and communicate what it's supposed to then all the pretty rendering and details won't save it. Good job Ramixton for sticking to the project brief.

Hodoca: This reminded me of a Miyazaki or anime style creature and I loved the design, it just didn't seem very hyperactive in the static pose. Nonetheless, the colors and the face with all that expression were great.

Voted for ramixton because I love the way the hyperactivity was captured through the kinetic [read: insane] pose chosen for the creature at the focus of the image as well as the background detail: I'm very much reminded of the way you can turn your back on a seemingly innocent child for a moment and when you look again you find crayon and handprints all over the walls Plus, I genuinely like the appearance of the little guys and can see why they would be chosen as pets until the discovery of the hyperactivity.

Jakkas was also a very cool and original idea but as they say, there can be only one

Seriously?

I wish some of the fellow COWies would have made a comment about it then. I had some time that I could have made changes. I honestly worked on this one so much I started to feel like I was over working it.

Being that I spent time on it, I know it wasn't rushed, and its definitely not unfinished since it has everything, including a description, done as intended. Which leaves insufficent artistic quality, and I can't imagine that a single toed wingless bird would be considered insuficiently artistic, and sloppy which is the only thing I can see a professional artist saying is definitively wrong with it.

I guess I just don't understand how I was excluded, based on the amount of thought and effort I put into it. It just hurts my confidence. I could have spent a lot less time and effort if I knew my work was terribly flawed.

Guess I'll have to start begging for critiques from now on.

Enough about me. I voted for Maaiker- excellently executed concept and design. I love the motion lines, they really give a sense of hyperactivity.
