One Twin Trying To Be Better Then The Other

Hello there, my name is brook and i am 21 year who is studying graphic design. I had no idea that drawing was important to graphic design and so i want to improve my skills in traditional and the digital side. My goal is to improve and like everyone else, i want to make great artwork. I have this dream of going to vancouver film school.

Hey there, glad to hear you guys started a sketch book!

If you let us know a bit more of what you're trying to accomplish in your drawing skills --color, form, texture, creativity etc... We can better advise you in your future posts.

For now, let's just see some more stuff!

And when you do start posting, let us know whose drawing it is, of course.

    Good luck!

Just a few drawing i did for fun. I was mainly trying to accomplish some tone and value in my drawings and having to practice drawing faces.

@kiwigarbage: Okay we will do that in the future.

This is Brook posting here. I have posted a spider machine which was made in google sketch up and placed in photoshop to paint and other machine sketches. I have trouble with anatomy and i don't really feel comfortable using a pencil so i got that Andrew Loomis - Figure Drawing for all it's Worth PDF and giving that a great read and doing a lot of practice with it. it. I need to really get more confident using a pencil i think. Tell me what you think and am i going in the right direction.

    thank you.

One problem I see is that it will be difficult for people to keep track who did what, so it will be difficult to give personal critique. Otherwise, the PS painting is pretty amazing, the linework seems to be good, keep it up! Post more anatomy studies.

@ pixel cheetah : fair point but we will see what happens for now.

This is Brook. I concentrated on anatomy by doing some pose maniacs stuff but i think 30 seconds is not enough for me so i will probably go for a much long time. I have more anatomy stuff which i will post more tomorrow morning but the scanner seem to work when it suited it so i only have these nine poses, i think i have the right idea.

Nice manakin studies, but be careful to look at the length of the arms and legs compared to the torso. In the Central figure of the last post's 4th picture they look especially short. As for posemaniac's gestures, you don't really learn much from the quick gestures unless you know your anatomy and are just looking for movement. I'd recommend trying to really capture the pose by just looking at the picture instead of using the gesture timer first.

Good start here, guys. You might try doing the gestures in pen or marker if you've been using pencil.

@ deerinheadlights: Thanks for pointing out the length of the arms and legs problem i never noticed till you said it.

@ klortho: yeah i will do that next time.

@ ryanoir: I live in Perth.

This is Brook. I'm going to change this username and make this my sketch book for now on. Still working on my anatomy as usual and just did things with cyilnders and circles etc. Did some hands and other random machine doodles. This only some of the anatomy i did today, still going to slog it out till i can get it the way i want.

Okay been going though practicing doing heads and doing the features of the face which i need start doing more often as other sci fi scribbles and hands as well. Still do not feel very confident doing heads which is why i am only showing the head exercises i did in the loomis book. Back to drawing anatomy and faces.

    Sorry if its not much.

I tried doing faces but i failed badly so i went back and tried to learn the planes of the head which has given me a better idea next i try. Did a few drawings of the lips and eyes from a mirror and so after that i decided to do some anatomy stuff with posemaniacs. Still need to practice.

Did some faces from my head, some are just scribbles to keep me thinking. More anatomy stuff from that Bridgmans pdf and played around with some ink by drawing with it. The colour of the car is fine but i need to blend it in, i like what i did for the metal by having it reflect the sky on top and having the ground reflected on the bottom.

    That is all.

Congrats to you guys (you and your brother) for starting this sketchbook.
Smart step, it's only the first page of the sketchbook and you have already
started to improve. I have no special suggestions, except for you to draw,
draw and draw. And then draw some more.
Visit the very first post in my sketchbook for some magic link collection.
That should help you on your never ending journey.
    Keep posting friends.

@LtPlissken: Thanks for the links man. This sketch book is now all mine coz my brother has no interest in doing one anymore so this is my journey now.

@Catish: Yeah i have decided to use other media so that i don't get bored and it keeps me sketchbook more interesting to look through.

Been listening to Boards Of Canada all day. Here is some stuff today i did that is worth showing, the stuff i am not showing was studies but i do not like them.

Sorry for the crappy crappy photo and the plane i think needs more lines etc to it too.

    That is all.

You (?) have a good grasp of line weight and variation, and those loose figures are a step in the right direction. Don't get too caught up in copying other artists' interpretation of the figure, you'll adopt the same mistakes
