Hello and thanks for stopping by my humble sketchbook.
Though my primary profession is physics, art is very important for me and I want to take it to a professional level and do freelance work. Some of my dreams is to do illustrations for MtG and DSA, since my friends and I like to play it ourselves.
So far I haven't done any commissions. I only painted for friends for free or in exchange for little presents. I want my work to reach a level where I would feel comfortable taking money for it ^^;
I am very thankful for any comment, advice, critique, overpaint/redline and for taking your time looking at my work.

I try to learn from Loomis' books as much as I can, and also from pictures and photos I find online, though copying muscles is somehow... not so enjoyable
Damn, I should actually do more of them.

Since I started live drawing I find that having something 3d in front of you is much more comfortable than copying from pc screen. It's not so tiresome for the eyes. Maybe I can sneak into an anatomy class too

What I have so far in one of my sketchbooks:









Finally managed to make the apple look 3d , but somehow the table doesn't look like ... a solid 3d object in perspective and that the apple is really lying on it.

Impressive sb already! Your figure drawings are coming along nicely, although you should try to improve your line quality, currently they are all too uniform and too light. But your 3D perception looks good, so just keep at it, you're on the right track Nice colour studies too, like that first orange is looking sweet! Nothing else to crit really, just keep doing this and you should improve.

This way I'm not getting anywhere.
I have to update daily even if it's just a little bit. If I procrastinate so much anyway, I can at least procrastinate by drawing.

What really bothers me is that I absolutely can't draw environments. Sounds like a good reason to do just that.

Hey Leysan, for the anatomy studies, do u really want to go so DEEP. Because
when designing a character or drawing figure you dont really need to draw so in detail ( human body consist of many muscle ) and do you really think you can memorize all the detailll part ?
For me i think you should studies the obvious part ( muscle ) of a human, same goes to bone. For example if you studying the bone for the leg, you would like to study the obvious part like joint-pelvis, knee and or ankle. Fine some reference and observe the part that you can see.
Hope u get what i mean and also remember to draw from imagination after u do the studies, help ur remember those muscle and bone, when lost do some research and stuff. Anyway nice studies and shading.

Ugh, yea right. I'm always getting caught up on details. Studying the superficial muscles instead would be more useful. I wanna do the bones though, skeletons are cool. Ok, thanks a lot for giving me directions

There's one thing I'm currently wondering about. Real people have fat and I haven't seen that in an anatomy book yet.

hmm i think its good to know both, because most of the superficial muscles are directly attached to the structure underneath, so learning both seems acceptable to me it also helps understanding the body i think.

i like your colored pencils as well, those fruit studies look very very good. keep it up

I think so too actually, for me it's kinda easier to memorize those things if I know where it's attached and what it's for. If for this I have to learn the not seen parts I must do that. And anyway, It' kinda cool to be able to name the muscles that hurt you after doing sport XD

Thanks try some colored pencils too, or pastels, the last ones are done with pastels, though they look messier in RL than scanned.


Ok, for now I switched from anatomy for geeks to anatomy for artists. The original pictures were from Anatomische Zeichenschule by Andras Szunyoghy, not sure if I like that book...

hey,your life drawings are really nice and you'll improve very fast by doing them.
and some handy advices (all of them are from great artists and teachers) :
draw general to specific.
you should understand that how the muscles and skeleton interacts together,how they move etc.
try to draw the muscles without any reference.it will help you to memorize them.
write each muscle's name when you are drawing it.
it will help you to remember them when you are doing life drawings.
you are doing it well,so keep it up.

Hmm... must look at some photos next, I don't get how they look in RL and I'm not so muscular.

The problem with drawing from imagination ist that I'm lost too quickly, so I end up doing research all the time...

Great that you're picking up anatomy. I think you should pick up Bridgeman's book The Human Machine. It shows you the functions of the muscles and might help you. Love the oranges, makes me remember when I did that. Keep up the studies and you'll go far.

I see you've been doing life drawing, how is that? I'm planning on taking a life drawing class about the end of next month, so any comments might come in handy. Anything you'd recommend in getting ready for it?

@Nezumi Works: Life drawing is fun, I like it a lot more than copying muscles out of books. Unfortunately I didn't have time to go there recently.
It helps a lot if you know a few landmarks you can look for, like in Loomis' "Figure drawing for all it's worth" page 50. The more anatomy you know, the more details you notice on the model too. I think this trick is also nice: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...d.php?t=115707
Just draw the people around you or yourself in the mirror, a lot.

I tried the 30 sek posemaniacs exercise, I'm not sure if it helps or if I should better take time to examine the perspective. I definitely should do gesture studies cause I seem bad at gestures. At least, what I draw and what I wanted to draw are very different things most of the time. I'm bad at drawing people from odd perspective too.

As for your question, about your uniform lines, as I stated above: your line weight isn't varied, that's mostly it. Study your life drawings, try squinting your eyes when watching them. Does any one part pop out more than the others? It really doesn't, but it should. Have you been to AztcFireFlower's sb? Her figure drawings are amazing! Study them, squint your eyes, you'll see the difference

Not sure if I understand the line weight principle, like when do I use which line weight, but it's learning by doing I guess.
