need help to install patterns in corel painter x

Hello there . I had just purchased the video from Massive Black Andrew Jones Fine Art #1 . It is so well done. The only insruction I stumbled on is how he explained to save a black and white image shape in the pattern chalk section to make a brush. He expaines to open the image and auto select and than save as a brush. I tried all day and cannot do it at all. Is there anyone out there that has the time to explain the steps to save B/w image shapes as brushes in Corel painter X. It would be of great help. Sincerely TMSC

you are not saving as a brush.... you are saving a pattern in the drop down menu in the pallet window

Using the Rectangular Selection tool , select the area of the image you want to use as a pattern.

Remember, selection edges meet when the image is tiled, so select carefully.
    2

Choose Window menu > Library Palettes > Patterns.

    The Patterns palette appears.
    3

Click the palette menu arrow, and choose Capture Pattern.
    4

Enable one of the following options:

Rectangular Tile places the tile in a rectangular grid for fills. The Bias slider does not apply.

Horizontal Shift offsets the tiles in subsequent rows. The Bias slider controls the amount of offset.

Vertical Shift offsets the tiles in subsequent columns. The Bias slider controls the amount of offset.

As you try different tile arrangements and Bias settings, the Pattern Preview Window shows the result.
    5

Enter a descriptive name for the pattern.

Corel Painter captures the pattern and saves it to the current library.

After seeing some of Andrew's work I just had to get all his videos...Totally worth the watch even if your not a huge fan...I was blow away by how he picks and uses his shapes to render awesome images...the man is truly a master at what he does!!!

Im actually a fan of his, but hated the video.... well it was fun to watch but i didn't learn anything and the sound quality of his voice was horrible, not that it matters because id say half the time it was just music. The whole thing is his pattern brushes, but he doesn't say how and why hes selecting the patterns, just magically the right one pops up every time. then he uses the lasso tool and glow brush for everything els. Its just a video showing you a guy who has honed and mastered a style you cant emulate lol

buy it if you like his work and to see how he thinks.... tho the voice recording is sooooooooooo horrible

don't buy if you want a tutorial or a how too use painter video.

Yeah the sound levels were going all over the place at times but I listened with my headphones on and heard everything the man said, you just need to adjust the volume a few times yourself. The music was hot! Overall the video was very inspiring and great to watch.

Everyone of course has a right think to whatever they want but let's put things into perspective here: MassiveBlack's videos are not that expensive to buy and I for one don't expect the perfect Hollywood quality from them. The most important thing is to see masters at work and be inspired and learn from them.

I guess if one expects a perfect explanation of every tool used all the time then this, and some other MB videos, may feel a bit of a letdown. But then you can just move on and feel the creativity pouring out from the videos. It takes some effort to learn Corel Painter but there are various resources for that, and the first one is the manual. It's important to understand what different tools do and it's really up to you as the end user to find them. No one said it's easy to master any creative tool as huge as the Painter is, and you know, it's not meant to be easy. It takes sweat, time and more sweat. And hopefully if you have a good eye and steady hand you may achieve the level Andrew, Jason Chan, Nox and other guys in the videos are on.

And about your criticizing Andrew's techniques used in the video: that was a bit rude, man! Even if the technique in itself is "simple" it takes a lot of talent to build stuff up the way Andrew does. Just look at the results! I for one learnt a lot from this video and probably will use the knowledge in one way or another in my own learning and working. After all the tools we use aren't supposed to define the work we do too much, but be there to be used as tools to bring out our vision and show our skills.

And yeah yeah, I'm not fuckin' preaching the truth here, since what the hell do I know. I just wanted to bring out my view on the video and say that it really is inspiring to see such a great use of the Painter in the hands of the master. Personally I've really enjoyed all the videos I've bought from here since it makes me hope that after all the struggling I'm doing in Painter and Photoshop I might one day create stuff as great as I've seen these guys do.

And I'm waiting for the Vol.2!

really appreciate the feedback. hopefully some of you have noticed the increase in production values over the years as we've invested some of the revenues into better equipment. but, as kodekon said, it's not hollywood production that makes a video good or bad.
