    Eyepractice

    Yaay...Practicing painting eyes obviously

I'd like to have some input from anyone--It'd be greatly appreciated, I know it's stylized but it's a lot more realistic than what I normally do.

    Kay bye

Painting wise, I cant really say anything cause I suck at painting..
but studying anatomy and proportions would really give your art a good foundation..
keep at it! these look good but challenge yourself to take these to the next level!

Your SB made me angry. Not your art,but the things said here. The first post said something like "good...cartonish,but good", then you almost said "sorry!!I´ll change it to something more realistic!"................as if a cartoonish style was bad!!!If your style is cartoonish, why are you trying to be realistic? Why don´t you just try to improve your cartoon style?ungh....
About your art,I like it and I like the effort you are showing. But focus on the anatomy.Cartoon is not weird anatomy,is exagerated anatomy or stylized anatomy,bu to do that, you have to know it.So make more studies and more life drawings!
    Cheers!!!

    Hi,

In the Style thread you mentioned your studying animation. How far along in that process are you? Another question; the life drawings, were they from an actual life drawing class? If so, what resources or educational philosophy is your instructor providing or recommending? They seem a little undirected, as if you were placed in front of the model and just told to draw.

If I were you I would pursue obtaining a feel for the real gesture and structure of the body and let the more superficial elements develop as a by-product of the overall improvement in your abilities and knowledge. Style should really be that last thing on your mind at this early a stage of development and it may only lead you down false paths.

The three books we require as texts for Beginning Life Drawing at our school are Nicolaides' The Natural Way to Draw, Bridgman's The Complete Guide to Drawing from Life and Hale's Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters. Nicolaides will give you direction for what to do with your time in front of the model, Bridgman will give structure to your forms and Hale will add an understanding of how many of our conventions and understanding of form developed.

    I hope this helps,

    ~Richard

Geez, talk about reading into it! Well yeah I'm trying for animation, the life drawings were just well me going into my class and my teacher saying draw. As far as what they've told me before are well things like--
Don't work on the outline first, or measure using your pencil, annnnd then of course I've been told I'm just missing the final bit(s) of life drawing (whatever that means)

Over all they still helped me greatly, but at the same time as you can see I'm lacking a bit of direction when it comes to life drawing. Philosophy was just as sparse, I did enjoy the one time in class when I was told to copy a certain artist's drawings (Villipau? It's probably spelled wrong) It was only one image but in the drawing you could clearly see the artists way of breaking up the mass into sections. (Thanks for the reference to the books I'm currently wanting some new anatomy books!)

One thing though, in reference to life drawings what exactly is seen as superficial? You mean work with the gesture first and let the rest come together? (Thanks for helping so much!)

Superficial is usually a criticism applied to drawing wholly concerned with the exterior details and events of the body. However, the word does have a myriad of uses and applications.

We teach our students how to develop the figure from understanding what's happening within the form (gesture) as well as how to see relationships and proportions (blind contour, angle studies, point-to-point construction). If you're getting a copy of Nicolaides' book, al of this will be more thoroughly explained there.

I'll try to make good use of this, did you know that the stubs atop of a giraffe's head (the little pseudo horns) actually are there to contain blood? This way it can raise it's head faster in emergencies and not be whiplashed or dizzy headed.

    Annd more sketches

yes yes, more, My thread is a tad big--I wonder if that's okay

I figure the bigger the sketchbook the more chance to well improve, drawing is the only way to improve and so i have a lot of drawings.

    Either way enjoy
