Hello everyone here's my first post! i'm new here...well not really...ha..been roaming around the forums for awhile now but haven't had the guts to start a sketchbook..i'm currently 17 and still am working on a portfolio to submit by the end of JAN or FEB to LCAD and ACCD...even though i really don't know where to go... i applied to SJSU animation/illustration program and will probably go there due to financial issues...

i'm also thinking about going towards the community college route and then transferring to either Academy of Art...or if i get into ACCD...who knows?! I NEED TO LEARN HOW TO DRIVE...what a shame haha...

...i'll get that driver's ed done this weekend hehe..

well here it goes....PLEASE CRITIQUE ME!!!! tell me what you guys think!

Neat stuff! I'm not much of a critique-r or anything, so I can't really help you there.. but I know what you mean about the guts thing. It took me a couple months to even join the forums, I was so intimidated!

Your style is cool, it reminds me of graffiti. And I really like the 3rd one, is that marker?

Anyway, keep up the good work!

Haha, yeah to be honest the class is a little lame! Nobody in it really cares about art or knows what they're doing.

Plus, my teacher is going through menopause so she can only help me out between hot flashes. :-p

Hence my joining of concept art!

but in return we don't really learn anything from our teacher just some basics but hey it's that self-motivation that keeps me going.

Great bold and unhindered experiments in design and style. I like the graphic panda. That you are having fun shows through and that's attractive in your work.
Your traditional studies are quite good. T'will be interesting to see how your ideas combine with your growing traditional experience.

DUDE!! your stuff rox. I love that your work has a sense of humor, but even more so I love that you aren't affraid to experiment with different medias.

ohh yeah and your drapery study is mmmmmmmmmmmazing!!!! if you keep going on those self-portraits and eventually work your way into color I think your gonna get really good @ it really quick.

VenustusVis: Thankyou!! ahh i learned so much from that drapery study! basically learned how light works and it's principles. still i'm far from mastering it! UGH. COLOR..is my weakness.. at times i tend to use all the colors of the rainbow...lol..i need to set myself to use a limited palette well...start off with the black , white and the greys or something!

finally got these uploaded

These figure drawings were done this year at AAU's pre-college saturday classes. UGH.. too bad my class was combined with the drawing and composition class and there was some kid that was uncomfortable with the nude models that it changed into a clothed figure drawing class. BLEH! oh well
the only thing i didn't take advantage was the short poses, and trying to understand the torso, which i'm lacking on. all i really did was try to render the form, especially the faces..ugh. stupid me!

Your work is lovely! The only way I could describe it is "unhinged" keke. All I could think of suggesting right now is to be more convergent. The pieces I'm most drawn to are those that have more "less" and less "more" (probably not so eloqeunt a way to say that, heh) like your woman surrounded by eyes and the child with the bat. They're graphically stronger and have greater focal points without being cluttered. Just keep learning from all experimentation!

Thanks. Nice work, your figure drawings have a rare essence to them, keep working at it and I think you could get really good. Most of the noobs at AAU sucks, judging from your skills, you've got nothing to worry about. I don't live in dorms as a matter of fact, they are 2 expensive. About a grand or more a month; me and a friend found a place together. If you know someone who is willing to go to AAU, I suggest you find a place. Save the dorms for last resort. Oh, btw, how did you enjoy the pre-college class, I never got to try those things?

love the new stuff! especially those last two the baseball player and the abstract painting/drawing. Is all of your stuff traditional art work scanned into the computer? The only reason I ask is you have this great way of giving your work a watercolor asthetic.

At any rate keep up the good work! Your work is really really good and considering your only 17!! I can't wait to see some of the work you start doing in college.

raspa: Raspa thank you for pointing that out! haha...i tend to draw the viewer's eyes everywhere to much with all the things going on..UGH...haha its a habit i guess...NEED to fill up all the spaces! hehe... i will work on it!

. bah i still don't know...i might go to community college first. Did you go straight into AAU? The pre-college classes were ok. My friend and i took Drawing and Composition, Painting, 3D animation and modeling, and Comic Book illustration. I just wished i took figure drawing during the summer in replacement of 3D animation...because i slacked in that class...wasn't too excited but wanted to try something new but in the end it was pretty cool even though my animation sucked butt. IF i had taken the figure drawing class in the summer i would've gotten Henry Yan!! man i bought his book...speechless... oh well overall even with the crazy tuition fee it was worth it, learned a lot!

VenustusVis: Thanks :]. Usually all my pieces i take pictures and the smaller pieces haha..the ones that can FIT in my scanner i scan, 9x12's! I still have to apply to two other schools! AHHH...college college...

ok here are some pages from my sketchbook.
some drawings, thumbnails, studies and some experimentation with pencil, pen, color pencils, water color and crayola poster paints!
lol..the page with frank frazetta on it was done with my left hand..ha..was quite inspired after watching "painting with fire." FRAZETTA IS A GOD!
I picked up a few books at the half price bookstore today...got this kick ass book about Rembrandt.. tons of reproductions for what ? 5 bucks? 20% sale...priceless... haha gotta go back there to get moreeeeeee books

Naa, i went to city college for about 2 years, got A.S in Graphics then transfered to AAU. It was kinda a waste of time but at the same time it wasn't cause I strengthen my art skills a lot while at city college with self taught stuff; basically, I had a 2 year head start of everyone at AAU cause of it, so it's really up to you, If you need the time to train or if you think your ready for an art college. Cause most students straight out of high school tend to have the highest drop-out rate in AAU. Don't want to scare you or anything, but it's true. Another important note---I don't know about other art schools, but AAU's website has a transfer sheet of what you can transfer in from your community college. Choose the C.College that you are attending and just take the classes that are transferable, in that process, saving you money and time if you do decide to go there. I transfered like 32 units for my community college, so technically, I'm a Sophomore=). Hope this helps.

Oh, yeah, that's the first book I bought this semester. Best book ever. Although, Sometimes I feel Henry's student should learn more from classical artists rather than just absorb his style. They need to be more versatile with figure drawing. Oh, and if you ever want to meet in person, I literally live at Henry's workshop, lol.

haha i'm thinking about that whole transfer plan.. because i still want to have a formal education. still be able to do something like calculus when i'm old haha...ugh i don't know, it's just theres so many things i want to improve on, but most likely i'll be focused on art more soo :| Ugh let's see what happens after i graduate from hs. ahh theres so much to do. LIFE IS SHORT.

There is such a huge improvement since the start of your sb it's amazing. It's great that you are still doodling and having fun but keep up the ref work, it's doing you good! I'd like to see a finished piece once in a while, just to keep you disciplined.

Yo toaster - I'm digging the clothed figure drawing poses up there - the ones where you focused on the rendering. I really admire your rendering ability with those figures. It feels spontaneous, yet pretty accurate.

I think it's funny how we are opposites -When I was in figure drawing class, I never really took advantage of the longer poses - but I always digged the shorter gesture poses. I guess I was always more into animation and quick stuff.

Critique: You have many head, hand, torso studies, but I don't see any original full figure poses. Besides your charcole figure drawing studies, I only counted 3 full figure illustrations - and they are all really abstract. I think you should work on more of that stuff. You have a lot of variation, but I feel that your batch of crop angles, and perspectives get repetitive. But, pretty good overall. Are you applying to illustration or graphic design? I think you have a pretty good feel for some graphic stuff.

Hey I was reading on some stuff you wrote about your colleges. I wish you good luck with that. I went to ACCD for their saturday high (pre-college) program for 4 years in high school for some figure drawing, and industrial design stuff. But now I'm at a university getting a broader education.

I was gonna say you could go to a university with an art program like I did - if you are really into education and learning stuff. But, I also wanted to mentioned you could go to Pasadena City College (PCC) and take night classes at Art Center College of Design. It gets your general education credits out of the way, while taking great art classes.
