nethus: Thank you! Yea, portrait seems like a strange word to use for a bird, doesn't it? I was actually planning a very iconic composition, some saintly aura thingy for the white bird head. Who knows, might still do it.
28chelseaslater:Wow, thank you! Skill = lot of time+lot of practice hehe. Really, that's all it takes. Thanks again!
Hethabyrh, such a cool name
Thank you so much!
Exquisite Beast:Hehe, any reaction at all is a good thing huh? Thanks a lot for you comment! I do't always try to make things creepy, it..just..turns out that way. Not my fault >.<
Hilbruks:Thank you!I've really been trying hard to do some decent character designs, your comment is very encouraging!
Doronila:Thank you so much! Don't be envious, just draw
taeyoungchoih my! *trying very hard to not do the fangirl squeal thing* Thank you so much for commenting! Yea, I find deciding on the palette one of the most hardest things to do too.Hard, and fun .
pedram:Thanks a lot! Don't know what you mean by A sector though.
HarvesterSam:Thank you! I have a bit of an OCD with detail I think? hehe
Arbu:Heheh, me too
Wollstonecraft: Woah! My God, I don't think I can react to this correctly, hehe. Thank you so much, you totally made my day!
I'm also feeling super ashamed that I didn't know who the Borg Queen was. I looked her up in Google and the pattern /stuff on the head is sooo similar to what I had planned for another painting, dang!
Danuh:Thank you very much, I'm glad you like it!
William b. Hand:Hehehe, thanks man!
Icey: Hi! So cool to see you here! Thanks for the comment, mainly because now I found your sketchbook, woohoo!

Another tiny update to the birdie. A friend of mine said he looked less like a birdman and more like a birdfrog, hmpf! That's not a bad idea for a design though, hehe.
Need to get the head out of my system. I'll post the whole thing (or atleast some other part) the next time, I promise!
awesome sketchbook! I really admire your ability to render translucent materials, skin...O_O

Merlkir:Thank you!
I was feeling rather guilty about not having painted all day, so here's a quick self portrait.75 mins-ish. This is my way of rebelling against the whole"omg all the girls you paint look like you" thing I get to hear so much. So this time, I did paint me, hah! I bet they'll tell me this looks nothing like me now, heheh.
The teeth looks strange huh? Oh well.
Wonderful stuff, your use of colors is incredible, especially your rendering of materials. Keep up the great work!
Awesome work man. I love that last portrait. Your work looks so realistic. Keep it up!

wow, I love the soft, "fleshy" feeling you get in your creatures!
The incredible amount of detail that you put in your work is... well, mind-blowing o.o What resolution do you usually work at? And how much time do you spend on a piece? I can almost feel the fleshiness and softness in your renderings...
Keep posting, feed our hungry minds![]()

wow, that bird is totally cool! love your stuff![]()
These look great! The textures you are getting on your flesh, and the translucent qualities of the skin really sell the perception that there is blood muscle and bone beneath the surface. I strugle in my own work to make skin that looks real, and not a figurative representation of skin. Nice job.
hey, cool to see you here, long time no seen... Art looking stellar.
Hey Iridyse, I am absolutely in love with your work, I really like that bird beast thing, you have such an amazing realistic quality to your work. I can't wait to see what you paint next!

that self portrait is fantastic. Do you use painter, photoshop, or a combo of the two? I'm just trying to figure out how you get the skin to glow the way it does... all dewy and awesome.![]()
Wahoo!
Farsh: Thank you so much!I find colours very hard to work with actually. Trying, trying
ItalianHorsey: Thanks a lot. I did get the "Na, it doesn't really look like you" comment though. That and a 'did you rub oil all over your face before painting yourself' comment too, haha. Yea. must stop making things shiny!
Fjooner:Thank you !
Reika:Heheh, yea I have a bit of a obsession with details, trying to step away from it. I work at 300dpi almost all the time. When I start off, I usually paint in smaller sizes, like 500x700 px or so and then gradually increase it as I start adding detail. I don't think it's the best way to work, but with a slow comp like mine it helps. Also there's a certain bit of a blur that you get when you increase the size that I like, helps in adding focus a bit.
As for time, depends. Till I get bored of it I guess(which happens super fast btw). Thanks a lot!
mentler:I had to pinch myself! I am SO honoured, thank you!
Malakai SinClair:Thanks a lot! Experimenting a bit with unconventional colours and lighting a bit these days, fun stuff.

hmanafi:Thanks!
Oblio: OMG, thanks!
cakeypigdog:Thank you!
Draniel: Hehe, thanks!
Camiam321: Thanks a lot! I highly recommend doing Master Copies, you learn SO much from them. Bouguereau for skin!
ikuru:Hey! So nice to see you here. Thanks a lot!
Jillian:Thank you!
BohemianChaos:Thanks! I use only Photoshop CS2. Don't have Painter. I think I should get it though, saving up for it.
About skin, or most materials for that matter, a teacher once said that the secret lies in the highlights. I think it's just a matter of placing it at the right spot and at the right intensity.I'm also a strong supporter of "broken highlights". Basically, using a textured brush to break up the highlights as you are painting (assign a spotty texture to the brush in Photoshop). When zoomed out, it seems to add a little extra to the painting, I think.
I've attached 2 images from a copy I did of Bouguereau's L'Etoile Perdue. You can see the brushstrokes and the broken highlights in the first one (about 50% of the actual image size) then in the 'to view' version you can see how it
looks when zoomed out.Better than adding flat patches of paint huh?
I think you get this effect with real media a lot better.(Think oils - you have the canvas surface, the texture of the gesso + paint . If you take a loaded brush and gently sweep across the surface (dry brush style) you'll get broken brushstroke like this like this).
Ok late here, I don't know if I'm making much sense. If you want me to elaborate, please let me know. Here are the pictures for now.
Birdman, yea! Started working on the background a bit. I have realized how superbly I suck at doing backgrounds. But hey, it's a start. Can always work on it, eh?I think it might look a little better once I add in the cyan light/reflection from the sky along the top of the rocky bits.
Also did a little test lighting for the reflected light on the birdieboy. It's a bit strong right now I think. Need to fix the shoulder/arm on both sides. I'll add some feathers and stuff to break up all the space on the torso/arm.
wow, you're style is amazing!
Beautiful stuff! I can't wait to see more. Your use of texture and color are wonderful. Keep up the awesome work!
