    Yeah, Exactly!

    ...wait, what?

I just didn't really feel it that post-worthy; forgeries and fakes are uncovered all the time. I take all art I see with a pinch of salt, don't we all? Even if I see a very famous painting that I know is that painting there's still that thing in the back of my mind saying "Don't be surprised if they find out it's a fake."

I'll try and find the example I'm about to give, but it's the case of a very famous painting that art-critics were lauding, as it was by some great painter... then they found out it was actually a paint-over, and the original, by the great artist, was underneath [and apparently much better]. No one had noticed, or rather no one wanted to notice, and said it was a brilliant painting if only because it was from that fellow, even though it wasn't actually properly his. I'll hunt for the example.

I think it depends on what you find as post-worthy, it was more a newsworthy item, Gauguin is one of the greats and for someone to fake his work and a museum to buy the work when it is not the real is extremely post-worthy. The painting under the painting and saying the painting under the painting was much better than the original is completely subjective, because the painting above the original might have been liked better by some. I posted a photo of an original Van Gogh here a few months ago and people said it was crap well WTF can you say about that. There are many things you could say about the art that is shown here but to mock a Van Gogh......

BTW is your avatar a forgery or a fake?

Person B painted over Person A's painting (I really need to attach names to this) and the painting was lauded because it was meant to be Person A's, but they later found out the bit they were looking at wasn't.

And by postworthy I meant a response post, not not worthy of being posted on the forum; I read it and, well, it's news, so cheers for posting it.

    My avatar is just shit.

It shouldn't matter whether it's a fake or not. Does it look good? Is it a genuine statement of artistic expression? A Van Gogh can be crap. Every artist makes crap at some point. The only reason this is even newsworthy is because of the whole speculation-based "Fine Art" world/market. They got gypped playing their own game, knowing the risks. Boo hoo, they paid $125,000 for a crappy sculpture that ended up not having been made by the crappy sculptor they thought had made it.

I can't condone this guy for what he did but this whole case made me smile. He was producing this work in a garden shed and his elderly father was flogging them. An expert who authenticated one work as a genuine ancient Egyptian artifact was on record saying the poor old chap had no real idea what he had in his possession. LMAO

There are loads of skillful forgeries in even the most prestigious museums, all over the world. When you see a piece of art, you can never be certain whether it's real, or fake--so you have to enjoy it for itself rather than its history.
