loved doing this one, great topic mr b. hand : )
bout two hours between painter and photoshop... where is everyone else?

I was on my b-day party/vacation, but I surely will do a sketch when I get home (if I don't start crashing yet that is). If so, I'll edit this post.
Great entry maths82! I love the feeling of it, the background has this unfinished feeling though. According to the cityscape, it should be nighttime so the sky value should be a bit lower (not entirely black but close enough). That way, your lights can be more dramatic. Right now they look a little washed out? But, I love your ship design, it's really awesome!!! Very awesome feeling to it!![]()

spent an extra 20 min on this sticking a festive wise man, but i could have just as well posted it beforehand - christmas? bah humbug I say! ;-)
flat as a pancake! damn it all!

40 minutes in photoshop. Will comment tomorrow... getting too late :|
Yes, it looks like Rubiks cube but i had Mondriaan in mind.

maths - that is one super creepy space sculpt; I'm afraid it's gonna eat me.
hamsta - been wondering how crop circles happen...
AR - I hope to be able to render as well as that someday. (For some reason the ship makes me think of...bowel movements...)
Nightblue - way cool, I can almost hear a soundtrack.
Tommoy - reminded me of hours of frustration as a kid. Can the aliens just take the colors off one side, and place them wherever they want?
Me - I was trying for something simpler after the last failure, but it just kinda looks like an orange harp with a penis. I think the sky came out better than any intentional sky I've tried, and I was just mucking about...
Wish I could say more interesting things, but I'm new at this.
Harder than I thought it would be. Ship turned out kind of flat, could have used some more detail. Still trying to learn technique and keep these under 2 hours and get some "real" work done at the same time.
maths82-nice atmosphere, nice ship.
Hamsta-like it's ready for some crop circles
Apocalypse_Rex's-left that part out of the wise men tale, maybe the star in the sky?
MiniGoth-those dang alien penises
Nightblue-love your sketch quality
Tommoy-very nice, great depth, and excellent cube.
maths82; Love the complex and crazy structure. You've got a nice 3d feel going with the tech clutter fading away in the distance. It looks like an abstract mess, yet you can still see it as an alien vessel. Some of the rendering in the front seems rather vague and washed out, although it's on the foreground and should probably be sharper. Lights in the top left seems a little messy.
Hamsta; Nice and surreal. Like its lightness, almost as if its transparent. mysterious for sure, with no hint of an engine or boosters at all. I don't think the hedge in the front adds much. It seems a little out of place; all the sand, with a neat line of shrubs.
Apocalypse_Rex; Love the color scheme. Also like those highlights on the edges in the far right alot, and those square and triangular make for a nice contrast with the organic shapes. Nice design overall. Agreed its a little flat, perhaps you just need to empathize the light source. Seems to come from the top right, but it doesn't really add up. Can't tell from the man at the bottom or the background either. Plus overall, the bottom of the ship seems a lot more saturated than the top.
MiniGoth; No problem that you're new at this, keep joining and you'll get better for sure, its good practice. You can avoid some of the the cartoony look by toning down on the saturation a little. Those colors are really strong. It will also get better once you're ready to drop the linework. I like the fact that your vessel actually has some tentacle-ish shapes, along with mechanical boosters.
Nightblue; Like the combination of smooth and straight structures. Keep thinking of a violin or some other instrument somehow. It's a shame there's no background, because its hard to recognize it as a ship without surroundings. Ah well, 40 mins.
Tommoy; There's a great feel about your piece. The bold shapes in contrast to the smooth curves of those hills and the girl, the way you've angled your vessel, the absence of a front or backside, all add to the dramatic effect. What's going to happen here? Like the texture alot, and it looks like its actually following the perspective (how, btw?). The lights are the only thing I'm not sure about. There seems to be no interaction between them and the vessel. The shape of each light radius seems perfectly circular also.
erniesthings; Pretty crazy. No front or backside, no hints of anything you'd recognise.. just floating shapes. Pretty mysterious. Like those odd, muted colors as well, it somehow matches. Light source seems a little inconsistent. The pyramids on the side, for example, cast their shadow to the right, although their bottom has the darkest shadow.
Loakers; Many interesting things going on all over your piece. You don't seem low on inspiration. Looks like its more of a standing/walking structure rather than a ship though. I think something went wrong with your scan in the bottom left.
Hope its of any use, just some thoughts!
1.5hr, ps mouse. Did something horribly wrong with the red side of my thing.

thankyou Anthis,
The front leg things are suppsoed to just hang there, probably absorbing the clouds for a source of fuel i was thinking, however, the clouds i doodled in didnt quite make it in the photograph. My beloved scanner has died a tragic death and im using the camera on my phone to get images in at the min. however, less ecuses from me and i'll amend the drawing to be more clear![]()
maths82: simply awesome! all the details, and the design just says so much about the scene.
Hamsta: cool, it looks sorta glassy too!
Rex: very cool, invasion of the snail aliens! love that lightly textured look, almost look slightly leatherish too.
MiniGoth: very abstract definitely
Nightblue: I love your curvature shading
Tommoy: great colours and so clean! Very well done!
erniesthings: very abstract and definitely looks dangerous, reminds me of the head of a mace.
Loakers: cool sketch, is it walking or floating on the clouds?
Anthis: Cool dimensional portal thingy, I think the red makes it really evil looking
here's my entry, tried to give it as much of an electrified feeling as possible.

Been far too long since I last posted.
AlphaDMF: cool detailing on the vessel, definitely gives it an alien feel. I should have added some to mine =/
Doodle:
Anthis: Somehow foreboding... like it just warped in to wreak havoc!
littlellama: The composition really draws you into the picture.
Tommoy: So simple and sophisticated.
Apocalypse_Rex: overall a very attractive piece, well defined and articulated.
maths82: I like the shape and feel, but the lights/lighting feels very washy.
Hamsta: So THAT'S where crop circles come from!
Thanks! Although your texturing is superb compared to mine, I really need to upgrade to CS 2 or 3, the brush variance is far better.
Nice entries...
Think I'll try this one...
30 mins, Photoshop
VV
Ryoken: Very unique design! love the interesting highlights and shadows that come from it.
AlphaDMF: I think I just spend too much time on texturing, I need more line control. =/
Vanvalen: cool design! and so quickly too, the colors are done very well.
These DSGs really ARE good practice, learning things here and there about different categories from everyone. Awesome!
Edit: Now we just need a Christmas Themed DSG!
Here's mine... I tried to draw loosely, and let shapes come in... and keep perspective in mind without actually using any perspective grid as a guide. I colored pretty loosely as well. Usually, I try to keep away from all layers and brushes effect like overlay, screen, and light dodge, but trying to do that manually when all lights are set in, does take a while, so for now I excused myself and used screen/light dodge stuff (no overlays).
Does anybody know a good quick way of doing those without having to use screen/light dodge opition? I'm not talking about basic light glow or whatever, but the one that "bleeds" into the background. Like for example, sky, I tried to bleed some into ship, so that it looks like it's far away in the sky, affected heavily by "bloom" light. I already set down some basic color for that effect, but I ended up having to add some saturated light effect to improve its composition (exceeding from the moon to the medic dude and weapon? or whatever that is). The reason I try to stay away from overlay or other layer/brush opitions is because I want to force myself to learn some color tricks and ideas for oil painting.Of course, oil painting doesn't have that overlay or screen effect.
So any tips on that would be deeply appreciated.
I know, that was a late post, but I have been busy with my birthday! I turned 23 on 10th!![]()

Them aliens are a strange sort.

Mathis:Love your ship, almost looks alive
Hamsta: Your style is unique, great way to spin the idea.
Apocalypse_Rex Love the ship , and the sky is real nice.
I will post more later, kinda busy!
thanks
Jim
I love this place, being around all you great artists inspires me to create.
2 hours painter essentials 3/wacom tab
nightblue: looks tatooish, cool colors
Tommoy: I could never figure out one of those damn things, I would rather fly a kite.
Erniesthings: Ever watch aqua teen hunger force? I love that show.
loakers: I can see your idea, But I would love to see it in color
Anthis:Love the idea, maybe the red side should'nt be red, it looks like its kinda facing away from the warp hole.
Post more later!
Arteater: Cool design, good job on the farm scene too, like the colours. Though the upper parts of the vessel looks a bit "cut out"
Arteater Both of your offerings are quite similar, the composition in both is the same rather boring side view, with the subject matter perfectly framed in the center.
The basic shapes are pretty similar too, although I think you managed to give
the green ship more depth.
Ryoken Goofy aliens, where's the logic in such a design
I think it could use a secondary light source, to better show us the shape, and a more meaningful background.
littlellama Well, it's certainly abstract. So abstract I can't even make this out as a space ship.
Looks like a lightning shooting sphere caught in a tornado.
I think the "electricity" is chunky and thick, and would have more impact if the surroundings weren't quite so bright.
Anthis The red storm looks very physical, and looks to me more like blood and not something I would expect to see happening in the atmosphere.
Looking at the clouds surrounding it, it isn't actually in the atmosphere, which might work elsewhere, but looks out of place here.
Doesn't look like it's making any light either, and yet the ship is lighted by it.
erniesthings I feel as though this has some untapped potential to be striking work.
I think it may be the trees' fault, as they pull the eye away from the ship as they seem more detailed.
More contrast on the ship, and between the ship and the bg might be nice too.
MiniGoth First of all, some technical issues: make your pic smaller, so that it fits on the average persons screen, we'll see it better than a thumbnail.
Second, why are your lines aliased? Using the pencil tool instead of the brush, in PS?
Side views are pretty boring as far as compositions go, and you also have a lot of empty space
