Chow 97 :: Hippie Joe :: Final Burning

    FINALS ONLY
    -=HIPPIE JOE=-
    -=ROUND 97=-

    -------------
    Primary Character
Across the field from Farmer Thickets' Crop Circle farm is the local recycle, run by a friend of Thicket's, Hippie Joe. Nam vet (he was a corpsman), and ex-emergency room doctor in the inner city, Joe lives a quiet life recycling the local recyclables and pontificating upon the world's woes.
A little more than slightly reactionary, he is now the local peace activist, animal rights activist, aniti-war activist, Global Warming activist, Pro-Choice activist, and, just activist in general. Anal about what goes where in recycling (plastics are *never* mixed with glass, which is also, by the way separated into brown, green, and clear) cardboard goes over behind the dumpster but aluminum can go *in* so long as it's not tinfoil. All recyclables must be washed clean of food products.
And he's strict vegetarian. Eggs are okay, because they're "cackleberries."
Long reddish brown hair, tie dye shirt, torn jeans and a Jesus beard with beads, he's Hippie Joe.

Here's this. Would have liked to fix so many things and polish it a little more but I did what I could without going over the time limit.

My vote was for Spitch although I liked the style of Food's entry I felt that it did not answer the brief as well as Spitch. Nice work everyone.

voted for puppykitten, i think she captured the brief best, a modern day old hippy, trying to get back to the missed out 60's feel due to being drafted in the military at the time.

I voted for Jack Fost's illustration. I really liked Food's as well, but as someone already pointed out it doesn't seem to fit all of the criteria for the character. I liked Jack's cause it has a really good feel. His face looks open and genuine, he looks pretty laid back, which I'd assume any hippie would be. I also really like the perspective of the drawing and how he tackled painting the tie die on his shirt.

My vote went towards -Food]-. I liked the stylization and the pose.. but there are other strong candidates.. Jack Frost's which had more realistic touch which I liked and I found Jska's entry to be amusing. Another one I found to be interesting in terms of character would be prophet's. I could definately see that scene to be a part of an animation.

    Fydbac didn't win?

I found his drawing to be genuinely beatifull in every aspect, and even the facial expression was full of love and peace. I consider him having won the battle by a longshot. in my heart, anyway, haha.
