Two years of ImagineFX stuff... (And a couple more on Page 2!)

It's been a long, long time since i've posted here, and i thought about doing this a year ago when i'd done one year's worth of ImagineFX work, but it's been a crazy year for me, with some of the biggest highs and deepest lows of my life (both personally and professionally), and i've not visited any of my favourite forums as often as i would've liked. So i thought i'd break a habit and chuck some stuff at the 'finally finished' section...

Two years ago a stranger called Rob Carney emailed me and asked if i'd like to submit a tutorial for a new magazine he was launching called 'ImagineFX'. I knocked together something about a barbarian called Bjorn for the first issue. Since then I've done a bunch of stuff for the team at IFX, some of which i like and some of which i don't (But it's still nearly all here!). But everything i have done has been free from unnecessary intereference, a great opportunity to get my work 'out there', an important learning experience and was ultimately the kick up the butt to make the jump to freelance.

Most of these images were for workshops on themes like 'Photoshop Brushes', 'Learning Painter' or similar and a few were for the Q&A section or to illustrate tips. There's quite a bit here, so sorry if it's slow to download.....

Bjorn, from Issue01, being nice to garden birds:

A shepherd and a troll and a few sheep, for a workshop on using CS2's brushes, an illustration of 'Red Riding Hood', an alien squashed into a UFO, and a fella with a ogre's head:

A character, Chimpski, that started off as a valentine's day card for my girlfriend. I used it as a header on an article and then for a three-part workshop on learning Painter. My first three paintings using Painter IX!!

And here are a few more... running up to the October 2007 issue, which featured the 'Siren' image and the 'Uncle Sam' tribute on the back cover.

'Circus Freako', an ongoing personal project which i used as a basis for a 'character concept' workshop.

The 'Highland Minotaur', painted using a pre-release beta version of Painter X for a promotional booklet accompanying IFX:

Great stuff Jonny. I can't remember seeing Chimpski in the tree. I'll have to trawl through my back issues. I really like how you injected the essence of Uncle Sam into the Martian. It really looks like Sam and yet it doesn't, quite spooky. Hope you get more highs than lows next year.

Always love to see your stuff....I remember when I was super poor last year I was leafing through IFX in whsmiths and saw something you did...and had to remember to google you when I got home cause I couldn't afford the mag...keep it up man, great style

Villa... Ta, my 'style' is something i'm always unsure about and don't feel like i have a lot of control over. It kinda happens and evolves and people seem to like the work, so that'll do me.

Polonoid... Thanks, and for the comment on the tutorials. It's good to know some folk enjoy them.

Silver Rains... Thanks, i like that one too, and funnily enough it was one of the quickest illustrations i've ever done. It just plopped out of my stylus and looked OK, which was good because it was a short short deadline!

Pete.. It was actually quite nice for me too, putting this stuff in one place on my drive for the first time. I got to see some progression in style and technique. Thanks!

Andreas... Chimpski's gonna need his own comic, which was the original intention. But i'm short of time with 'proper' work. And someone told me about a NASA chimps animated movie that's coming out next year, which is a tad annoying.

Kian... Cheers. I'm doin' OK. We should have another get together at some point and i'll try and 'properly' attend!!

Rusty baby... Chimpski in the tree was a page header for an article called 'Wacom Tips' for the Feb2006 issue (not sure what number without looking myself!!), hence the wacom and dangling pooter.

daveneale... Haha, i get that too with magazines! No cash to buy them and walking home trying to remember an artist's name... With a google in mind, my website is waaaaaay out of date. My last words were a promise of a big update after xmas. Last year. Umm. Maybe after this xmas i'll get my arse in gear...

great work, love the blue soviet chimp image with the rocket in the background. that needs to be a t shirt.

only crit is on the siren image. itd be cool if the axe she is wielding had a bit more nautical design to it, like a sacrificial hatchet or something.
