Book Covers/Personal Paintings (update on 07/19/09)

This is my first book cover for Sci-fi novel called 'Invasion' from Underwood which publishing 'Spectrum, the art book'. The book is modernizes and continues H.G.Wells' classic War of the Worlds with a trilogy of modern military adventure SF novels. I was working very closed to author and publisher together.



And This is the cover of comic book 'Cold Heart' issue #1.This image is not finished yet. I would like to see how it is going. The comic is on the process, and the story is awesome! I couldn't hardly wait for its coming out.



This is the image I created for ImagineFX UK magazine came out 10-29-07. It shows the process of making the image.



And last painting are my personal paintings for my art book nextyear.

I've seen some of your images in imagenFX and they really caught my eye. You're brilliant with colours and composition, I really like the expanded view of the shark one, actually that image influenced a sketch I did believe it or not.

I really like cold heart, the colors used in the 3rd one, and shark rider is very fun to look at.

one gripe i have is with the 3rd one, why the mech is looking down and shooting up. I would like to see him shooting closer to the character, maybe even hitting the groundplane in front of our eye.

the winged lord is very cool, the bounced warms vs cool green/blue are simple but work.

Tae, you're easily one of my favourite concept artists out there and I loved reading your feature in the latest issue of ImagineFX. A couple of these images that were printed looked awesome in the magazine but to see them in big here is great. You can really appreciate the details.

That 'Invasion' cover is just stunning.

Yes, I sometimes use 3D tool. believe it or not, I used to be a 3D guy for a game company, and got really good luck to jump to concept artist position. I love it much much better, no comparison....
Shark Rider, I really like it myself. I think people notice how much effort and love I put on my work.

Very, very good.
The shark the best and one of the most origianl concept have ever seen, but to say other things than compliments, the shark's upper jaw is a bit disproportionned. The dying guy is pretty good too.

All of these are good, but "Cold Heart" and the shark one are stellar. The little dabs of color on the ground in Cold Heart make the picture, and I am beyond impressed by the way you handled all the lighting and distortion effects of the water in the shark piece.

The Shark Rider is definitely one of my favourite images. I love the painterly style and you nail it perfectly every time, especially with this painting. The sky and the water, for example, just look so great and you don't have to make it photorealistic to really give it a sense of life and realism.

If you don't mind me asking, what brushes would you usually pick to paint a sky like that in Painter? I love how painterly it is, but I can't seem to achieve the same sort of feel with any of the brushes I'm trying out.

Thanks for your compliment, I am not sure if I am deserve it though.
I don't use any special brush. Anyway, the painterly brush stroke on sky, I usually use artists' oil brushes and blend the strokes using grainy blender artists' oil. I attach my painter brush set , so you can take a look at.

Edit: I'm using Painter 9, and I've heard that .PAL files are for Painter 6. Is there any way to still use these, guys?

The artwork is amazing but the typography seems to be lacking a bit, mostly in regards to the HG Wells inspired book.

I like these very much - good sense and grasp of place and atmosphere. Only crit would be the keying in of details to the whole - something I notice because the atmosphere is established so well.
