hey guys! i finally got around to shooting some of these, and wanted to update this thread with some new oil portraits. these were all completed during our tuesday night alla prima class over at the NEXT GEN ATELIER. all were done in 1.5-3 hours, from life, oil on canvas.

coincidentally(shameless plug) i have a video covering alla prima head sketching coming out soon. so if you are interested in how i make these things, please check it out.

anyhoo, i hope you are all doing well...i need to poke around in here in the sketchbook section more....just so goddamned busy these days. thats no excuse though.

    well, here we go....

    thanks for looking.

ahhh! you're making me miss oil painting. ok that's it, time to shelve the laptop and bust out the jullian and gamblins.

are you using a palette knife to scratch out the lines in the paintings? that's a neat way to indicate strands of hair - gonna have to remember to try that someday.

seems like there are lots of cool faces up in SF. do my eyes mistake me or is that lipa from reverie?

thanks a bunch for sharing these coro. really love the last painting especially. great capture of emotion and texture.

Man those oils are freakin amazing. I'll be doing some portrait studies soon too. Have been working out to that for some time now and feel confident enough to ask my sis to sit for me. i can tackle a still life, but portraits!! scary shit man.

    Would appreciate any suggestions.

Ah, the joys of oil portrait painting! That last batch makes me happy just looking at 'em. One thing that strikes me is the lightspeck in some the peoples's eyes stand out a lot, which gives them a real eerie stare. Was that intentional?

i read or heard somewhere that Rembrandt use the back of his brush to scrape the hair in the oil.

I do love me some oil sketches. Great to see the pencil stuff continuing to come in as well. Great stuff man. I especially dig the handling of shadows and reflected light in the portrait of the white-haired lady in the black collar. I wish I had time to talk about these more! Awesome work!
