A little bit of grenogs

Hi, and Welcome,
I would offer you a drink, but as you can see, i am virtualy out of everything. Anyway take a chair, relax and have a look around, if theres anything you like or dislike, please do comment, as all crits are much welcomed and appretiated.

Something about the sketchbook. Well basicly i'm hoping to put a mishmash of everything and anything in here, from thumbnail sketches to finished pieces. Both already established styles to more experimental techniques for finding new styles for my main interests of illustration.

First piece is just to get the thread going and also an experimental piece i did for 3ch, basicly i've gone to realy like black&white images, and so this is just something to start and hopefully develope a little further towards a new style. Done in painter, brushes used were soft oil pastel to just lay the main colour down, then blended with the just add water brush. Then used the soft charcoal brush for main details and slight texture.

This is just 1 image of a set of 2, still on half doing the 2nd image, it'll be the same subject, only that one will be all dinosaurs. A mixure of panter and photoshop, probably half and half.

An image for chow, supose to be set in 1900's, and had to have a character that roamed an apple orchard and basicly ate everything, both animal and human . Anyway this is what i came up with. I quite like this image, but i dont think its quite suitable for my portfolio so instead ive decide i want to take the monster out and replace him for most likely a grizzly bear or something similer. Anyway ill add some more images of the result later on, maybe even a small step by step of how its going.

Very nice start here to, what's bound to be, a great sketchbook. Loving the pieces thus far, and the creature in the last piece is just awesome! I'd love to see any step by steps you may have to post and becoming this good is something I'd like to stride for!

I think I shall bookmark you, grab a seat, and watch the show

The first one reminds me of 'Finding Nemo'. But you have a distinctive change in your style with each piece which I admire.

thanks guys, much appretiated, im hoping to have a newer version of the last one by next week, But im also hoping to add some rough sketches, after all a sketch book without sketches isn't realy a sketch book.

This image was for the daily sketch group, never tried one before so i thought id give it a go, not to sure about the style, very alien and loose to my normal stuff. Reasons why the background colours and stuff?, basicly im thinking if he's white and blind, then the creature more than likely is built for very dark, posibly black conditions like a cave, leather skins= harsh conditions, so i guess you could think of him very suitable for living in hell or something similer, deep cave system, only light source being that from lava, hence the leather like skin for protection. Couldn't imagine what he would eat though, probably canibalistic. Big head?= sonar

tools= painter, real blender round, may have been adjusted

Another chow entry. Supose to represent a book illustration for a made up fictionaly story of a mage squirrel called Cedartuft.

Love the tail and magic effects on that last piece man. Just "Wow!" Pretty badass squirrel if you ask me

Wish I could see more of what's creepy towards him though....

First sketch well actually sketches are basicly very quick sketches of my cat, these are 5-10 second max sketches, very quick very basic, no study of shadow, only your basic shape study. These are actually brilliant for doing warm up sketches before you actualy start painting or drawing seriously.
2nd is my mouse, done with only a x-soft pastel brush in painter.

my chicken image, done again in painter, using the x-soft pastel brush(texture 10%, paper-normal smooth paper), soft charcoal brush(change paper to rough artist paper for a more gritier texture), and background done with the salt eraser brush customed to work on any layer instead of just the watercolour layers. Also just add water blender from time to time to soften up some areas.

thanks daraf, im realy liking the black and white, i think i would like to get that wood engraving type tones, 3 tones only, but without the wood engraving effect, but a more softer feel

Another b&w, again in painter, brushes- x-soft pastel(10% texture) soft charcoal, artist rough paper. Im not to sure if i like this one, i rushed it a bit, the leg bothers me quite a bit, and its a little rough for my liking. But i think it captures the mood i wanted, so all in all it was a worthy excercise, techniquely however, hmm, not so happy.

Ok so this is my fur experiment, The whole purpose of this image was to see how fast and how easy i can create pretty realistic fur on an animal, (suitable for reference or natural history book)preferably shortish hair of a dog, though i think i need to experiment some more, to get an even shorter hair effect, also i think a more polished and cleaner effect. There is a few rough section on this, mainly lack of concentration, hopefully with a little more focus, i can clear them up also i can speed things up. I'm coming to the conclusion there is no quick fix, and basicly the best technique is basicly the same as if i was painting traditional

Brushes used were: soft oil pastel, customed soft oil pastel, and a soft charcoal brush for the long strands of hair, such as the whiskers and the hair around the neck and leg.
I think next image ill try a customed soft charcoal brush, i'm hoping that will give me a more softer feel. But if anyone has any techniques they can share, i would be very very greatfull.

No real erra, just a mix of, lots of influence from mongolian armour, but was also trying to get something else, not sure what though. I'm guessing it was doomed from the start.

This was supose to be my chow#99, but as you can see it was unfinished, no real excuses, just simply got bord and lost infusiasm. Plus it just wasn't working, maybe suitable for a history reference, but not anything else, theres just no oomph with it. I must also remember to get things done in one go. 2 weeks is way to long for 1 image, all the fun disapears after the 3rd day.

Anyway painted in usual way, soft pastel, soft charcoal, in painter.

i dont like the horse, actualy theres a lot i dont like about it now, lol
though i do quite like the green skull, that was a nice happy accident using an illuminous lay in painter

couple more unfinished pieces here, and some small experiments, started liking images by Dulac and Kay Nielsen, so i've been doing a little experiments lately, dont realy like the polished ink outline though, so im playing with first pencil, then a ball point pen.
BTW, the bottom japanese image was originally taken from a photo off the web, i just added the umbrella and changed background, sorry i cant remember where from or who by. Anyway just thought to mention, becouse of copyright laws, dont think im breaking any here though becouse im not making money from it, but unless anyone can tell me different then i think im ok
