So, I thought I would start posting some very helpful and/or inspiring websites that I come across from time to time. Here is a wonderful blog by James Gurney.

Not only does he update everyday, he also explains so much about values, compositions and colours. Very, very informative.

I really enjoyed looking through your sketchbook! Those quick life studies are very interesting since I just started drawing from life a lot too. About the watercolors (and other figurative paintings too), I think trying different colors that you wouldn't normally think about using (blues, greens, violets, reds, etc.) would help out and make the subjects more interesting. I'm sure there's like a gazillion websites out there for painting techniques, but unfortunately I don't have any links. I know Super Skoda explains his process in his sketchbook which is pretty staight forward, so you could look into that as well. I look forward to seeing more soon!

Admittedly, it isn't the most educational site. However, he updates everyday and there are a lot of videos to watch - if for nothing more than some entertainment when you're bored.

Anyway,

@everyone: thanks for the all the support. I don't feel justified posting a reply without a large art dump, so although my replies are late, I do read everyones comments as they come up, and I thank you all for that.

@Jamesy: Thanks for the tips and reference to Super Skoda, It's funny you mention trying different colours. I once did a watercolour painting in really low light and could just barely make out the colours (Although I didn't realize it at the time). After I finished the painting and took it into normal lighting conditions, I had all these saturated greens and reds on my figure, and it actually looked pretty good.

@movites: I can't believe you are the first person to mention hands! I haven't really dedicated any time studying them, as a result I'm extremely bad at drawing them. I'm definitely going to do a bunch of studies now that you mention it.


On to the drawings: Maybe I won't give up traditional mediums just yet. Marko Djurdjevic's drawings have inspired me to pick up this thing they call a pencil. All from imagination:

@everyone: Thank you for the support! No hand studies this time - I lied - next time though, I promise, even though I find drawing hands boring. You get the joy of having to draw 4 fingers for every hand!

I'll give a little mini-tutorial with this one. About the overlooked "edge induction".

I learned about this from James Gurney's Blog (visit him, it's worth your time):

A basic overview of what James is saying is that, if there is edge that is in shadow and shares a similar value on both sides of the edge, you don't have to draw a contour, instead you can simply blend each side into each other. Quoting from Gurney, "Painters shouldn’t seek out edges that aren’t there; in fact poetry often springs from deliberately placing edges into obscurity..."

I was excited by this idea, and definitely wanted to try it. If you look at both legs on my drawing, neither of them have a hard edge when they transition into the background. If you click on Gurney's link he shows more examples, including one by J.S Sargent. And if J.S Sargent does it, you know it's gotta be good!


Here is another watercolour. I took Jamesy's advice and tried to add some more colours. Damn scanner destroys all my beautiful colour ? Still would like some help with them.

This is really nice stuff, instant five stars!!! The latest watercolor is impressive. I would be curious to see you do more wet on wet in watercolor. If you haven't heard of it, you might pick up some neat ideas from handprint.com I definitely want to see more of your work.

@Equus: Thanks so much for that link! So much information! Wet in wet is a strange mistress to me, although I do love the effects that it produces. I guess I'm still in the experimental phase with these watercolours.

@Hive_minD I checked out your sketchbook; very nice ZBrush sculpts. I've always wanted to learn that program. Too lazy though .

@Sealegs Variety is the spice of life! I actually get bored of the same medium after using it for about a week. So I'm always switching between pen, pencil, charcoal, watercolour and digital.

Haven't done much digital drawings in the last week, so just some traditional stuff for now:

i think u need to practice on ur imagination work a little bit...u r really good with reference, and all that knowledge needs to be aplied (as the arms u did)...let us see some more imagination, but keep the life drawing too..good luck and cheers mate!

@Dan Valkar: I appreciate the crit! My imagination work is really bad I'm trying to work on it. I've managed to get to the point where I'm not completely ashamed to post them; hopefully to get some more crits on them.

@Lakka: Thanks! It seems like I'm not getting better as fast as I want/hope though.
