wee update: Glaurung in Nargothrond

I've been listening to The Silmarillion on audiobook again lately. Some of the names are so evocative. Sirion, Beleriand, Doriath etc. Here's a couple of scenes inspired by this great book.

i agree with molly- beautiful pieces! and i also think the second piece is nice as it is, not that im experienced in that field. Im not familiar with the story, but i could imagine a child playing in the ruins

I love the absence of presence in the second piece, infact to me it kind of makes the emotional impact. Theres a lonely, "lost in time" kind of sense that you (or maybe its just me being the werido that I am) get from ruins and abandoned buildings. Like there used to be people here, there's evidence of that, but then something happened...Maybe they moved to greener fields, or the civilization fell into disarry and abadoned this structure. Were there feasts and partys held here? grand ceremonies of kingly sucession? what words echoed in those halls when there were people there? Its like an invitation to imagine a story. Fantastic.

If I were to make a suggestion, it would be that the horse is alittle too sharp, edgewise. I also think another animal, doing its thing inside the structure would add to the abandoned feeling the piece evokes, as well as add to the element of reclaimation already present due to the hanging vines and mosses.

Absolutely awesome work again Pete. My heart skipped a beat when i saw it was new work from you, and when I saw that these were Tolkien inspired it skipped a few more!

must say, this your works are really cool. want more from the silmarillion, because im really big fan of tolkiens work.
as others said, there is a lot of inspiration in this book (especially first epizodes from valinor, there is not much pictures from this).

cool stuff. Particuarly like the first one - the treatment on the ships is spot on!

The second one is good too. nice mood and sense of history. The chairs seem oddly placed though, off to one side. I would expect they would be placed centrally on the platform as I suspect they are thrones, but then they are preseted with facing to the darkness which doesn't make sense when I imagine when they were in their prime.

If there was light filtering from the right facing the thrones, it would suggest more to this area than we see. Maybe its because if the high contrast that's throwing me. I would imagine any architect would want to present their king/ queens in the best light to anyone visiting and so would structure architecture to do so...but what do I know?I'm guessing anyway.

Over all though, nice work!

I think the grazing horse in the second piece really makes it, no other presence is needed. It makes me want to be there.

being a true fan of Silmarillion I think you really nailed the mood in "Ruins of Doriath". Don't add anyone into that pic, it has to be completely desolate I think.. The first one has the epic scale of the book but I just think there was no ships involved in assault on Nargothrond (I checked the image name), they crossed Narog by the bridge. I thought the image looked more like scouring of Brithombar and Eglarest (where elves escaped with boats).

I really love Silmarillion and other books written by J.R.R. Tolkien. These two pictures are beautiful. Very nice colors. My favourite is the second one, and I think that you don't need to draw human there. This is absolutely great work!

Also, the mosaic on the walls in the second image is amazing, really adds realism to the image.
