Hmm... speed painting, at least the way I understand it, is giving an overall representation of an image in the least amount of time (and, I suppose it follows, with least amount of strokes). In order to create a speed painting effectively, the painter must employ all that they know about the basics (perspective, value, lighting, etc.) in order to create a cohesive and appealing composition. So basically, before you can speed paint, you have to have an understanding of the fundamentals.

So, and I hope I'm not being harsh, I would suggest that before you start painting fast, take your time instead. Study objects carefully and draw them as slow as you have to in order to recreate them as close to the original as you can. This will give you an understanding that, later in the learning process, you can apply to do speed paintings.

    No problem!

Concept Art 101 and Perspective 101 by Seedling, especially nice since it gives you assignments to work on the things described.

    Loomis Books for further reading.

Here's a video of a speedpaint that I've always enjoyed watching over and over again: http://www.inetgrafx.at/ (go to downloads and snag the speed painting tutorial under "Goodies")

Some of the brushes he used to create the speedpaint are even available for download right above the movie.

I agree with ceberae that speedpainting requires a good knowledge of the principles and fundamentals of art. So it might be a good idea to sit back and take your time. Unless you're career is in art, you probably don't have any crazy deadlines, so take whatever time you need to get what you want out of a painting. At this juncture in your art life it matters less how quickly you do it and more about the quality of the finished product and how much you learned in the process.
