sony, love all the portrait practice you're doing!

but dude...get some paper that isnt all wrinkled!!! i know newsprint wrinkles fast, i dealt with the same thing a lot too back when i was taking some classes. it can really screw up your ability to lay down tone.

i feel like in your digital pieces you have this fear of going to black. look at that black and white portrait of the blonde woman. in the photo the darks go all the way to black, but in your painting (and most of the others too) you only go to like a mid level gray.

Ryan a.: Lol yes my friend these are wrinkled newsprint, I don’t know but I kind-a liking the smoothness of the surface while putting down the carbon on it For using black, I avoid the black in most cases just a preference thanks for pointing it. Cheers

Wou, it's been almost a month since i have update anything! here's another portrait!

and the erin digi-painting are nicely done - good shapes, solid values and a bit of dimension is coming through.

I would say, humbly, to worry less about the details ( eyes, mouth, nose etc.,) and focus on the key shapes and shadow shapes first, then - sort-of creep up on key details that matter. this will help you get better likeness, proportion and perspective over time. At least that has been my experience. Also is there any chance at all you can find figure model workshops/walk-in sessions near where you live ? drawing from life is, in my opinion the single best way to learn to see and make decisions about what you see ( and decode a 3d world onto a 2d piece of paper and then re-imagine it as dimensional).

That last piece with the hands is... pretty crazy. And really good too.. strong hands! Just confused by the middle section of the paper which I can't seem to figure out.
Portraits are coming along nicely, amazed you can do that with that paper, haha. Try some colour though! And just how do you produce stuff like in post #78? Like it, by the way.

Nice studies, the hands in post 101 and the last repin study in particular! Fun cartoons too, though maybe think a little more about the thickness of each line - varying your line weight adds a certain something when all you have to work with is lines and flat colour

Good work on Repin study, would love to see more color studies.
I have to agree with Monstertree, experiment with line thickness, at the moment you illustrations look a bit flat.

Solid advice form Kevin W. For he longest time I had issues with value. I found the best way to find the complete range is to use only 3 blk, wht, and mid. Then in a master copy assign them to the painting your studying. You'll learn to see the differences pretty soon.
