FRIDAY'S CREATURE FEATURE: ZUNDEGRUT
I've decided to do a creature feature every Friday for shits 'n giggles. I saw a wonderful quote (sorry if I've forgotten your name) that said "if your creature isn't weirder than corn, you didn't try hard enough." fantastic quote and I'm going to design monsters with that by my side. So, I hope this creature is weirder than corn lol.

Damn there is some great stuff in this sketchbook. Your pencil technique is fantastic. What type/size of paper do you work on? Also you did some amazing trees back in post 8 and others, i think you should add plant life more often.
My only crit is that your human anatomy and painting need a little work but you've already improved I think you'll have it in no time.
Thanks man. The pencil work is a mixture of digital and tridational. I have an 11X14 pad I like using. The digital is done in Alias Sketchbook and I think the standard canvas is like 12X12 or something. Your right about the anatomy. Sometimes I can really nail the proportions, but there's still trouble areas. If I look at a figure, I don't have a problem with it. But as soon as I try and do something from memory, little areas get jumbled. I'm looking to post a crap load of anatomy stuff here soon to tweak those hard-to-do areas![]()
I think there is some awesome stuff here - my only comment would be to lay of the detail for a while and concentrate on the silhouettes and pen strokes.
The later drawings are pretty much my comment exactly - you sense the dimensions of your forms and punches out the characters much better!
Keep it up!
I'm making a conscious effort to do more figure drawing and more gestural stuff. I love gesture sketches and I just flat out haven't been doing them. I need to get back to my roots. I must!

Phenomenal work on your senior thesis! Thanks for sharing your entire process.
Couple questions: What kind of clay were you working with? Also did you fire it before painting on it? The lighting on it creates a very polished feel (besides the bodacious curves).
Thanks Shou! that was a huge process. I don't know how many all nighters I did ha. We had 10 weeks to smooth it out with tools they use in the auto industry. The clay is what they use too. Most automotive clay has sulfur in it so when you heat it up in the ovens it smells like shit and turns green if you burn it lol. But the clay I used was way better and got really smooth after steeling it. Steels are just thin, strong tools used to smooth clay out. We heated the clay up in ovens so it got really soft. When everything was smooth we had to shellac the surface so the primer wouldn't eat through the clay. Then we used real automotive paint.
It was a super fun project and I honestly wanted another school quarter to work on it (we had 20 weeks altogether). It turned into an interior project as much as an automotive one. I've been thinking about doing some full blown fantasy renderings of that badboy soon. Thanks again for the props.
...annnnnnd here's some hands

I have no clue what this thing is. 10 minutes worth of a character sketch. Kinda reminds me of Kabal with Elephantitis lol.

Mechwolf
-This creature is from a comic I'm starting. In this case, wolves mutated and evolved due to radiation from nuclear machines of war.

Great work here - cool to see the comic work stuff - wanna do one to! Overall your designs are really good but you could maybe try some practice to render form and light better. Been doing some stil life stuff myself and helps heaps!
Keep up the good work - eager to see more comic!
