Hey, i have browsed these pages for many a month now and decided to stop looking at the pretty pictures and start doing my own work, not that good a drawer but thought I'd start learning...

Below is the start of my first real 'assignment' that i have given myself... will see how it goes....

Had a bit of fun scribbling with my tablet one day and so the background of this shot came about with a few filters added for effect...

Hey Awoo, welcome to ca.org... Glad to see new faces around here, my first comment would be to not neglect the pencil, especially when first learning to draw, practice varying the pressures and getting a nice range of tones in a few studies from life, they will help tremendously with your digi stuff... keep at it dude ;-)

You're just starting out, so it's too early for me to give you any specific pointers. In general, you need to draw from life more. Take a few hours every day or week to just sit outside and draw whatever you see-- cars, houses, rocks, trees, grass, etc. If you find yourself wanting to draw something you don't have access to, find reference for it on google images or flickr. Before you can begin drawing from memory, you have to have a strong understanding of how that particular object works.

The same thing applies to figure drawing. If you have access to one, join a life drawing session. If not, find a website with nude models to draw from-- fineart.sk and www.characterdesigns.com are good ones. Read figure drawing books, study bone structure, get a feeling for how the body actually moves and what its limits are. Don't worry about fancy things like color until you've really improved your form.

Also, avoid photoshop filters. Unless they're used in a very subtle way, people will spot them right on and call you on it.

I really like the pic in #13. Are you going to attempt the drawing?

Hey man. I'm very glad that you liked my paintings!

I think it's really cool that you've gotten into this thing. I would like to remind you not to beat yourself up about trying to get better. Everyone's been there.
Like learning any craft, there's a lot of frustration with drawing and painting, but from my own experience, what you'll remember are the late nights with good music, just you and the canvas. And some pretty sweet JPEG's to show for it!

Experiment with palettes, try and get some theory in, and studies of course. But explore whatever you like about art, and try not to compare yourself too much to the experienced people. You'll be there in no time if you have fun. That's what it's about

Thankz Crazy, yeah i have started just doing what i want... i find it enjoyable, however i am unable to do as much as i would like because of other studies. my plan is to enroll in a drawing class to get some theory, once i have finished my current course.

SaiVix, i didn't even think of doing a free hand drawing of it, although now that you mention it i reckon it would be good to use as a study. Lets see what happens hey...?

Thanks for being the first to comment on my sketchbook. I'm glad someone appreciates the time it took to do those scales. I haven't been doing much lately, but do have several pencil and ink sketches I may scan sometime. I like the way you use color in your heart and butterfly paintings.

Note: These were drawn in an old 2006 diary i was given, because no one wanted it and it was a hard cover, so i thought why not...
