Let me start with a 'happy new year!' to all of you! It's been a while. More than two months actually. It's just that I hate all the scanning and editing and scanning...now I feel the time has come to get into the swing of posting regularly again.

School has left me with massive amounts of work, but it is all too big to scan, and photographing proves difficult...hopefuly that'll be over when I buy a new camera for my birthday soon!

Here are some of the smaller things I managed to find just now. Some of it dates waaay back to last year, others are more recent, like the lifedrawings. I'm kind of proud of those, it was my first time lifedrawing and I learned a LOT. They're just 1-2 min gestures, the more elaborate works are all on large size. The rest is just sketchbook randomness.

Two comic pages done for a school assignment. They're kind of rough but we had to do this in a few days, including all the preparation work. Besides, it's all analog, including colouring. I have some concepts and sketches for it too, I'll scan them later. If it taught me one thing it's how much more difficult making comics is than I thought! So many things to consider...I'll be doing some more just for fun if I find the time.

Some figure drawings done during a workshop. These were not done directly, but with a kind of etching technique, after the original pencil drawings. You'd scratch whatever you wanted into a sheet of plastic, and then print it by rolling the sheet, covered with special ink, and a wet sheet of paper through a press. It is not a very complicated process, unlike real etching, and produces some nice results.

I got my new camera last week, and I'm very happy I did! I'll give you some photographs of work I was previously unable to show you. Photographing paintings remains a pain, I've got to work out the lighting issues. First up are two plein-air paintings from last summer(!). These were the first I ever did.

Been working on my oil painting again today. Not a huge step from the last picture, but I don't think I should go too far with this. Maybe one more layer and I'll call this done.

Here's the last things I scanned. It's a few sketches from my dummy, nothing fancy. Quick lifedrawings and some random character designs. Now I'll be off to keep this pace up. I need to work harder!

This afternoon I had a go at some improvised cast drawing. The reference was taken from my art history book. It's a sculpture of Buddha, which had some nice volumes to practice upon.

Yet another charchoal study of a still-life. Als here is an illustration done in the same technique as some of the lifedrawings I posted earlier, the so-called 'dry needle' method. The effect is very disorientating, you can't really focus on the image, which was exactly what I wanted.

Love the work in here absolutely man

Nice that you're also back in the regular updates.

I found that photographing the large work is only doable when you find someone with half an hour of time to hold the papers up, and you photograph by daylight in a well lit room. Then the quality is quite okay though.

I think the illustration is a really good image for the word you got.. What was it again, overspannen toch?

Pfew, I missed a whole week of school due to laziness, but I'll see you next monday I guess

Today has been a busy day, I've done a lot of school studies. Not all are worth showing here, so I made a selection. Finally, there's yet another update on my oil painting. Glare totally kills it on the picture. Never mind, I'll be calling it finished and move on to other things.

Update time againg before going back to work. A bunch of anatomy-ish excercises from the head plus a sheet of costume thumbnails which I enjoyed very much. I've been researching clothing and costume recently, and boy, it's astonishing how much brilliant designs mankind has created since it's existence! Definitely an interesting subject, especially for illustration.

Yesterday I went to the Groninger Museum to see the Waterhouse exhibition. I wasn't disappointed! Of course I knew some of his paintings from reproductions, but again it became clear to me that seeing a painting in person make a huge difference. Highlight for me was his painting of Circe offering the cup to Odysseus. Having studied greek and latin I was very familiar with it, but in real life it was mesmerizing! The more I looked at it, the more impressive it seemed. The transparency of the fabric, the majestic expression and most of all the mood and the colour struck me. I did a sketch of it, as far as I could manage with the hordes of people that stood in front of it, and the result can be seen below.

Good stuff mate, I wish I could paint like you. The six-hand painting is really striking. And nice previous update, I learned quite a bit with anatomy, especially the on the leg. I had to look up the painting that you mentioned, I don't have clue about painting just know Klimt's work, but boy that is mesmerizing. Great costumes, how quick did you sketch them?

I really love that you use so many different techniques. That's especially cool at the selfportraits. I did some too this week, but I can really learn something from yours!

Marlisa: Yup, first year, and it's been good fun! I like to use different techniques, it gives you more freedom to express yourself. Right now I'm very much digging into charcoal, as you can see. The SP's were all done from the mirror.

A bunch of work for you guys.

First up, some of the more succesful results of some test printing with a woodblock. It was my first time working with the medium and I must say I really enjoyed it! Not sure if the design is alright yet (this is a 'sketch version' that kind of went overboard). Especially the vertical stripes are a point of discussion it seems

Second, a little improvised comic booklet! I had all these self-made booklets lying around that lacked content, so I went on the Black Frog-tour (even in colour scheme, I noticed afterwards:s) and tried my hand at some sequentials. Incredibly fun and challenging, especially without text to aid the reader. Wonder if it makes any sense to you.

Oh, and theres some sketching in there too.
