I'm pretty new to digital painting (and painting in general). The first apple was from a couple weeks ago and the second was from today. I know there are some crazy problems with both of them, so any advice is appreciated.

I finally got around to the apple painting and I'm kind of wondering if I'm the only one using Paint Shop Pro? It doesn't make much difference as far as following PS tutorials, I was just curious. Anyhow, here's attempt number one! I stuck to a hard round brush and once I had the basic colors laid in, painted at about 30% opacity on a single layer. Next time I'll place the cast shadow on its own layer--ugh.

    a common misconception.

people, it's MUCH MUCH MUCH harder to make corrections with a low opacity, sketchy stroke, and then have it look good. Be BOLD in your shaping. Use your higher opacity brush and trust your hand to make the shape right. It's easier to alter the interior details once you have the silhouettes of the shapes correct.

Here's another apple for today. I seem to be having a good time rendering this apple, mainly because it's green (Seems to be an easier colour for me) and because it's front lit. I have a hard time with shadows

panda, I think that's the part I'm having trouble with at the moment - my apples look VERY muted and muddy because I use low opacity and pressure sensitivity too much to make it too blended in. Can you please kick me in the nuts and tell me to be more bold? Thanks, really appreciate it

The previous apples I did were plagued by that problem, but this one fared a bit better.

That last one looks better Rabbi, you did a good job for the colors. I think the big problem about it is the contour that looks too jagged. It's not real fun to fix that but it'll look much better.

I'm new to photoshop and digital painting but the learning is great =)

This is my painting of an apple, i paused between sections and accedently managed to impale my apple on part of my guitar...so i ate it =/

So this is how i did for how long my apple survived for.

GOOD one! I actually have zero problems with your colors here - your outline is showing a little on the leftmost edge; otherwise I think you got it.

I thought this was a 'learning' thread, thats the reason we are all doing simple still lifes, like fruit!

    Starting at basics.

that's EXACTLY it. but the same principles apply to other things. You start with fruit because it'll ingrain the skilset. You could just as easily begin with a corona bottle or even a stool; it's a matter of simplifying shapes.

Very much admittedly, portraits and people and anything ANYTHING that needs to look like it can move... these things are much more challenging.

    :)

Hey guys , remember my traditional tempera apple?
I bought today a wacom intuos3. this is my first sketch on it. I don`t have much time now , but I promis I will detail the thing more another time.
Things are easier with a wacom.

I didn't realize how fun this was XD

And here all I've been doing is b&w!

Also- I think maybe you should desaturate the apple a bit Revolverz... but that is a cool drawing!

Mine... well I crapped out on the bg. I fell asleep XD

loadedpencil - frustrated? I can tell. you're not sticking to a coherent set of mark-making and you're going all over the place. Some areas look just about DONE but others are just blobs of soft color. Try to work on the whole thing at once rather than different parts at different times.

Joe Brown - I'd have to say... do more fruit first. You need to learn colors because in drawing a black man all you've used are shades of brown. There's all sorts of purples and greens and yellows in dark skin and I'm not seeing it in your piece. The fruit is an excercise in color - since it's all so vibrant we can see exactly what we're doing and where we're messing up but at the same time we have to use saturation fairly sparingly. Put up your process work too.

WinstonSmith - it's ALMOST good.... but it's wayy off. I mean, your apple is leaning the wrong direction. You started off with a substandard drawing and then rendered the crap out of it, which is hard since your reference is skewed. Also when you put it on a background like that, the shadow is going to look like ass unless you get rid of the white in the shadow.

Thanks you, google, for this "apple photo" image.

I got wrapped up and didn't remember to take incremental snapshots. Woops.

by blending i assumed i was using the blending tool too much. so i took blending in the approach of just using lower opacity. i dont know if its better but. by the time i was finished with this one i wasnt frustrated at least.
