homework 1 (deadline monday oct 1)

    1. create a thread in the following format "username (real name)", so like "steve (steve kIm) without the quotes. you can omit your last name if privacy is an issue. nothing fancy please! everyone will have their own thread they will post homework in and get crits in. you may also have to post homework on a seperate weekly hw thread but i haven't decided yet. let me think about it.

for each week's homework, clearly label/title the post with that week's #, in bold preferably.

    2. in said thread provide a link to your sketchbook. i'm assuming everyone has a sketchbook. below that, write about anything that describes your interests, ambitions, goals, shortcomings etc. the more you say the better feel i will have for what you want. this will be easy for some of you who have already written quite a bit in your original e-mail to me, you can go ahead and use that if you'd like w/ any appropriate changes. please take this part of the homework seriously, it's important.

    3. edit: attach 3 of your favorite works of your own. please put it above the other stuff so they are the first images i see.

attach (PLEASE ATTACH i dont want images going down) 3 images of things that really really get you fired up. it can be concept related or not, art related or not. is there some esoteric piece of philosophy that occupies your brain half the time? post the cover of it or something .

also, attach 2 images of something you really dislike. that means a total of 5 images. each of these things should be something you feel strongly about, that means you'll have strong OPINIONS and CRITICISM regarding them. please write a little something for each image... length is up to you, just as long as you get your point across.

    4. draw a portrait on paper from reference, and post the reference as well. don't spend more than 90 minutes on it. you can spend less time but not more please! reference should be high resolution, well lit, no over/under exposure, no wonky wide-angle stuff, and preferably color. why should color matter in a black and white drawing? well it does but i'll get into that later. approach this how you would approach any drawing. it's basically a baseline with which i'll compare and measure your performance. this way i am accountable somewhat. scan and post the finished drawing and reference in an adequate resolution, say about 800 px tall or wide.

    5. feel free to comment on other people's homework in their respective threads, so long as your own work is done!

    cheers,
    steve
