    ikarus's creative journey

Hello everyone, i'm new here. I guess this will be my first real exposure to a forum with my art work. I've been living a bit under a rock for a long time now, mostly because I was insecure on my skills. This site was under my scope for a while now but i didn't have the courage to post. I did have some portfolios up but never really got the proper feedback.

Regarding my work, i started in 2005 or even before that, i cant remember, with the desire to create virtual worlds in different games. Right about then i didn't know much about art or design i just wanted to create so i figured a couple of years later that 3D modelling was my deal. It was for a long time until I met the guys at Angels Fall First: Planetstorm ( will explain below). This was around 2006-2007. I have no idea how i managed to get there. But it changed my life. Even tho virtual, the constant exposure with a creative professional environment helped me get on the right track. It kinda killed my school performance but i did not care. I had no artistic background. I was going to a totally unrelated school so it did not matter to me, i was doing what i liked, which later on turned into a small freelance career. My parents never let me join an art high school. Only later on they (well just one of them) was OK with letting me attend an Industrial Design uni. The school only taught me to draw, i must give it this credit but other than that it was quite disappointing. There wasn't really much to learn from it, all the learning was done on my own.
I graduated industrial design, Planetstorm has come a long way in aiding me how to do 3D modeling but im still clueless regarding what i want to do.
At the moment i decided to combine my love for scifi and industrial design and start doing concept art. An entertainment design ( concept design ) career would be what i want, if i think about it. However i have no proper education in this field, most of the stuff im learning by myself. Its a bit hard to motivate yourself since there are hundreds if not thousands like me and have the same aspirations. I keep a it because it what i want right now.
Do you think this is wise ? right now im combining my skills to create only things i know how to create, it feels good but very limited. I dont see how one is suppose to live of of this properly.

Regarding angels fall first: planetstorm, I'm not going to say much so that I'm not accused of shameless advertising. Its a small team of devs from the gaming industry which, in their free time created this massive universe in the shape of mods and tc's for games like homeworld 2, nexus : jupiter incident and unreal 2, 3 series, also soon will have a more public appearance as a commercial version. so if you like scifi shooters combined with space ships, check it out.

    tl;dr - started doing 3D/2D now im doing 2D/3D

Bellow i will post some of my work and how i progressed from the earliest age( it is not all of my work but it is a gradual display of my knowledge)
Bad, old, ugly, new and some professional work are displayed below.

Hopefully you like what you see and if not it is probabily because i still have a lot to learn thus i am always open. Any type of constructive criticism will be more than welcomed as well as any other type of comments

Wow. This stuff's pretty incredible - I especially like your models, and the way they all come together in that presentation is seriously cool. Looking forward to more awesomeness from you soon - consider yourself bookmarked!

As i was looking forward to industrial design school i started drawing more and more.

In the meantime i was also working for Planetstorm, but the works i did i will not post here since its not relevant, you can check my portfolio(s) if you wish.

After learning to draw properly i gained more confidence in the desire to represent my ideas.
These "sketches" are still far from what i would consider finished piece. At the time i did not understand the steps of illustration thus most drawings remaining at the first level of messy lines.

... later as i drew, i tried different types of drawing but the obsession with ships never disappeared.

i dont have any crits for you because i totally beginner but i should say- keep you work. Your real models looks AMAZING.. I really like that. Maybe you have put a lot of effort for this. U need learn 2D (main: perspective perspective perspective. First learn to turn the simple geometric objects... like this http://www.autodestruct.com/images/perspective1.jpg http://www.autodestruct.com/images/perspective2.jpg) for fast sketches. Aaand..I'll say it again- really cool models from real life
SketchBook - Any crits and tips !
    Hope to find friends here

I like your 3d stuff. Really cool! with the knowledge you have in modelling I think your drawing will improve a lot and fast if you work hard! You have the advantage of being able to construct things and use them in your studies. For example, if you're studying anatomy, say an arm, you can build a simplified arm in 3d, focusing on the essentials of what you have learned and then keep studying with it. To be able to do that is gold worth!

I read your first post regarding you wanting to get into 2d and conceptart. I wouldn't lable it as wise or unwise, either you want to do it and you make it happen, or you want to do it and don't make it happen, or you don't want to do it and there's no need to go further. Don't worry about the thousands of others out there with same aspirations. They are all thinking like you right now "Is it even worth trying? will I be able to make it with thousands of others out there wanting to do the same?". I would stop there and look at where I am.. I would ask myself, do I want to do this? yes. How badly do I want to do it?

It's all about mindset and spirit. If you want to do it and are willing to do everything it takes for you to reach your goals then you'll be able to with hard work. I've seen so many examples of that happen right here. With that said, welcome! I would like to see more 2d stuff from you

Some advances done in school helped a bit basically only in the first year of collage i learned to draw but 2 years later left it because i focused AGAIN on 3D only. It helped me get some quick jobs and of course focus on Planetstorm, however after 2012 when i finished my degree, even though college ended i kept drawing and studying Scott Robertson's DVDs.

Right now i'll display some studies, and sketches back from the days of first year in collage, this is the stuff that won't appear on my portfolio :

*you will later see more renders and sketches that went to the further stages of design but only some, most are on my site.

These are final projects which i did during uni some have Scale model for them some dont. Leaning some more 3D techniques, a bit of graphic design and applying some more in depth composition rules.

I will need to speed up the past work and get to the present asap so that i can make this page my blog

Thank you everyone for your appreciation, if you have any suggestions regarding my work, development or this thread please post it
