    Aww, he looks sad...

Skin tones. Have I told you what I was taught in watercolor class? It won't work in oils, but the thought process might help. We would start with blue, followed by reds and yellows to eliminate skin tones which were too yellow.

I can also suggest looking up other artists and how they handle skin tones and doing a study.

Hamsta: he was probably happier before i painted him thanks for the advice, its so much easier to do that kind of stuff when people tell you to hehe

ghoulio: its been some time, welcome back and thanks
    and enjoy pinksteren as well

ok, so i spent this morning with looking up some tutorials and stuff for skin painting, and picking colors. in the end i decided to just limit my palette with white, red, yellow ochre and ultr.blue. and it actually worked i felt much more in control, and it felt much easier to make choices. think i will go on this way
this is what i did this morning: i like the first one best, it has a bit more flair then the secon one and i like the mouth better. colorwise is the second maybe better.

    advice is still heavily necessary

    Thats awwwwwwwweeeeeeesssssssssome!
Those paintings are starting to shape up.
With the gesture thing, great to see you done it, just sketch whatever is fun in that form.
With the portrait painting I think you need to think about the planes more, really break them down and concentrate on where everything goes.

    Looking great though
    keep at it

You should try adding more color, maybe under some colored lighting. Could be an informative experience.

I'll be updating my own sketchbook when I get back home, unpack my intuos3 and have access to a scanner. Less than a week now, after 9 months away.

lilnebo: yeah, i should keep eye on the planes, instead of just painting light where i see something light. i have to think a bit more while painting. i get carried away

herrleerzeichens: thanks dude haha yes your so wrong! i was totally not having a clue...but now i see some qualities in it as well, ive got to get those things under control as well though.

hamsta: yeah, lets make it evne more difficult i'll try sometime but for now i feel like i need to know a little bit more about the mixing of just 4 colors. i feel a bit more secure now, but still i get confused at a certain point

allright, heres an update! first some pics of a new painting, pretty big, kinda experimental with baking powder and paint and other stuff. its kinda in an early stage but i feel like sharing the progress since its something i hope to explore in the coming months!
and another portrait, female this time!

cool updates!! i dont wanna know what you put in that painting ( last post)
to get that kind of effect but sure looks nice

when you paint faces.. do you start with the big shapes?
i think its a good way to start such a painting.. then
when u finished the big shapes you paint the details,
shadow and light with smaller strokes.

great examples of this u can find in janaschi s sketchbook
iam goin to try this to, never done it before like that 0o

i get carried away with painting alot to haha sometimes
i really dont know how its gonna end
    it s funny though

    ej: thanks dude!
i start with big shapes, and then start to work smaller, but sometimes i just work out a small part before i go on with the big planes, its just how i feel...but the idea is to do the great shapes first

HerrleerzeichenS: haha, thanks man, my art is honored
and youre highly motivating, so keep doing that!

tomorrow i go to belgium to paint all week, and i wont be able to update, and theres also a lot of stuff i didnt photograph yet, because my battery recharger is ..somewhere...
but for now, just a pre-belgium update! see you in a week!

The baking powder stuff is crazy. I don't think it would work as concept art, but maybe for print.
It would help establish depth if you made the entire eye area darker, especially the scalera (white of the eye)

Heh you had fun with the baking powder it seems. You never know what might happen when you put some random substance into your paint. It gets you some nice textures here. Man, you could even make edible art this way!

Enough sweet talk however, I demand an Ardennen-update!

Hamsta: thanks for the advices, ill sure use them since this area of wannabe 3d stuff is kinda new for me

mouser: yo, welcome back!thanks for the nice words and ill check your sketchbonderground ok one of these days!

yngling: hehe, its fun to do, and im planning on doing some stuff with the textures soon. as soon as i find a good background for that bakingpowder stuff. after my week in belgium the whole damn thing is like a mountainrange, i think i need to do it on wood or so...

now an update, ardennen-update like you demanded selection of the works i kinda liked.. i cna tell you, landscapes with just watercolors is so much harder then it looks like...

the stove is also from my week in belghium, made that when i was freezing from lying in the rain painting for some hours

Looks like it was raining on you when you did some of these watercolors. They have character though, almost borderline abstract
Stove also has character, but where the landscapes are light hearted, the stove is more of an imposing/frowning/terrifying type of guy. (I totally see a face in it)

The first one really feels like it has mass, although the right door is a little unclear. Is it slightly ajar, or is it unintentionally look closer to us?

Hamsta: yeah it was raining, kinda annoying at that time, but i kinda like the effect now... funny that you see the stove's character, it was a badass stove and i agree with you that it has a face, no one can look at it without seeing a face
both doors were closed so im afraid its just sloppyness from my side!

    max challie: thanks!

here are a bunch of faces. wanted to try to work with 3 pre-mixed colors here, and use a lot of paint to concentrate on planes and brush strokes.
they were all made in max 10 minutes i think. i kinda like how they developed, and i learned a lot from it! got to think more about the planes though still...

Ooh! Love this one. It says so much with just a few strokes. The last one's great too.

Nice work from the Ardennen as well. You get along nicely with watercolours! The suggestiveness of this piece works great for me, and the one above as well.

Good stuff, bro. I like the more graphic approach, you see too much perfect work around here, not enough loose and messy paintings, which is refreshing.

The last one is disturbing. Aside from the lips which you are aware of, I also think his jaw is too low, nose too long, forehead too big.
I'd like to see what you can do with some artist tape, mix the loose brushwork with some hard edges. Could yield something interesting. If it doesn't you might still learn something.
