Hi Anthis. As always your gestures from imagination are great! Nice imaginative poses and diverse gestures, I'm inspired to try and progress with this myself as it's something I need to work on. Great job (even though there are proportion issues the gesture and your line confidence means I overlook that until I really study the picture)

Oh the stand out sketch for me is the last one on the left, great costume and pose

surus; Yep, they're piling up again! Coming soon!
AllyAlbon; Thanks, I just need more... stuff that is not monsters or anatomy ;|
ashess; Thanks! I too like the first one you mentioned. Actually I wanted her to be "forming" rather than falling apart. Nope, no papers in between. Would make the moleskine twice as thick, but perhaps worth it in some cases...
Angel Intheuk; Heya! Thanks, it's true proportions have been slipping lately. There's always something 'falling behind' without me noticing it.

Been doing loads of Michael Hampton studies. Anatomy was getting sloppy and needed some brushing up. Also perspective.

Bit dull, all the studies.... more interesting stuff soon.

    Allright, moleskine stuff too.

    Normal size, B pencil.
Though kind of new to me, I'm happy with the robot. More of those coming!

Great studies and sketches going on here! I really like your last post. You should work more on the posing of your characters to make them look a little more natural. This means doing tons and tons of gesture drawings. Keep it up!

    nice sketches anthis

like the characters and creatures, but your pencil seems a bit ... weak maybe a darker one would make them pop out more
some characters seems lacking flow, the head seem also a bit out of place (i'm being very critic here)

perhaps doing some gesture sketches would help
    good luck

Awesome detail and designs. Would like to see your characters in some crazy poses (maybe attacking, defending, climbing, hiding etc?).

I love the upper left ship. Great silouet, great design and cool details.

    Hi Anthis!

I love the enviro sketches on your moleskine. I would add more depth by making the values of the foreground elements a lot darker to get the impression that they are closer to us.

Charles Dana Gibson did this by placing his darkest values near the viewer while the background elements are less detailed and are lighter by comparison.

fantasyartist; Will do, I've noticed they are slacking. I've done gesture drawings but I tend to 'forget' when working on actual characters.
sin eater; Will certainly do! thanks.
zou; Thanks zou. Criticism is no problem, in fact I could use more of it. I'm working in B pencil at the moment, but having some trouble with the new scanner software which automatically 'corrects' values. Thanks for the crits on the characters, I do agree. I am somehow having trouble correcting this.
Kapri; The next bunch will be more dynamic. Already on it. I too liked that one ship, though I do realize its somewhat unbalanced. Bit new to mechanical design...
Dizon; That's a good example. As you mentioned, it is both the light and the detail that's different. Contrast too, I would say. There's just too many things to practice but I'll certainly take this into account!

Went to a free life drawing workshop with ashess at the Realisme12 art faire in Amsterdam.

First time I've done lifedrawing. Also my first time with charcoal, which was both fun and very confusing.
I was exhausted afterwards but it was a great experience. 1.5 hrs for these three. Size of these things is somewhere between A2 and A1.

Entry for last weeks Creature of the Week contest. Topic was "Great Armoured Bird".

    Ran out of time, unfortunately.
I've added some studies and sketches I did in advance. Took the opportunity for a bit of avian anatomy studying.

The clothing studies are good overall. Looks like you got a good grasp of it.

The frog pic is a challenge cuz it's hard to tell the light and dark separation on the form due to the lighting. It could be the flash of the camera that washes out the whole form. You did a good effort though.

    SSG Study #3: Transformation exercise

Sounds like something special, but it's a fairly easy idea.
You take a reference image of a certain object. Then you do a painting or drawing of this object, but with a new design. This means that the material, surroundings, and light conditions will be the same but the object itself will be shaped differently. In other words, you only need to change the form. Since you have the reference, you already know how it should look.

Examples: you take a promotional image of a car on a road, and make an airplane out of it. Or you take a cellphone and make a small robot. Or a picture of a bronze sculpture, and you make a different sculpture out of it. Or simply draw the eraser, pencil, sharpener or any other object on your desk in a different shape. You could do the same for any object or even animals.

To clarify where this came from: I once saw a website where studies were posted from art students from a school I can't remember. As an assignment they would do something similar. They took a promotional image from a car, and would create something new while keeping the material, surroundings and design elements of the original.

Does not have to be extensive. Deadline is next monday (the 20th, in this case) as usual. Ask if you have questions!

[note: we're doing weekly studies in our SSG. This is one of them]

Thanks for the support and thanks for the relentless critique!

zou; Yea I messed around with that one... It appears I cannot work on one aspect without neglecting another.
    sony; Hahaha, ooooooooohhh!
Dizon; Yea it was both relatively easy and tricky. Has one single light source, but way too strong it appears. I did have problems with saturation mostly.
knut-; Always lacking something! Yes, needs more life. Thanks for reminding!

    Random heads. Fun fun.

Also another moleskine page. Actual size. Have been a lot of vampires in my sketches lately... I was kind of inspired by the newly released GW Vampire Counts.

Last studies are just AWESOME, really !

very sketchy and full of quality
i see some minor proportions issues but nothing very visible and the whole is great

are u still doing the boot camp sketchs ?

I also like this new ssg study i was thinking that we might need some original assignments besides the normal, draw a 'thing'
if u have more of them i'm taking !

    good luck with your nexts

Sweet studies! Heads, clothes, anatomy, they all look good.

I realize others have pointed this out already, but I'll just reiterate that your shading seems to hurt your ability to communicate the character designs more than it is helping, at the moment. If it's your scanner reducing contrast, perhaps you should try increasing it again in an image editing program. I think contrast is the main issue, because the shading itself doesn't look bad. Also, don't be afraid to leave elements "white" or unshaded. There's something to be said for the contrast between shaded and unshaded as well as the contrast between values.

zou; Which ones? I'm still doing the Spartan Camp stuff if that's what you mean. I'll upload a big pile soon again. Lets put some more action into the SSG thing!

SaiVix; Hah, then you should raise the expectations of yourself!

Hai; The scanner does mess things up, but I've got part of it solved now (scanning with all adjustments off). But like you said, the values are no good regardless. I have to admit I can't put my finger on it though, so you can point it out if you can see anything specific. Perhaps the range between completely white and shaded areas is too big.

First one is a material study, optional study from the Spartan Camp. Reffed from http://www.vray-materials.de/all_materials.php. (black chrome and concrete)

Second one is a SSG#3 study.
*EDIT2* Finished it, sort of. I went with the original version of the exercise, which was to create a new design out of an existing picture. Messed up perspective. I don't quite understand the reflections yet but I do think I learned some new stuff. Ref is an Audi R8, from this place.

*EDIT*; also some fanart I had forgotten. Screenshot from Eva 2.0!

LOL we all chose cars! It's the most obvious reference we could use. I was trying to find other objects but I wasn't happy with the references.

Anthis- Cool design, man! And good job with the colors, too. I love the bright reflection of the buildings on the hood.

Looks like these weekly studies help us a lot.
