Just got back from a vacation. I've also reinstalled my pc not too long ago, so I'm trying to pick things up again. Sketches have been piling up lately, since I didn't update... Here's a couple though.

Studies from ref, practicing some perspective, anatomy ref is Bridgman. And a digital Daily Sketch Group entry (topic; herbivorous dragon).

nice sb you got here, keep it up with all those studies. your digis are looking good, i'd suggest pushing the values a bit more and also try using some harder brushes so you don't get the blurry soft brush look. other than that just keep pushing forward.

You can probably go much darker for more contrast on your drawings of the japanese woman. I'm sure her hair is much more darker. It's probably good to focus on the value of each element in your image. ( ex. Hair mass is darkest, face is lighter, clothing is middle value)

On you're jungle/forest speedie, some of the trees could have been pushed more into the BG. The edges could've been softer.

Nice Rhino like creatures! I like your creature designs. Nice ideas.

Dizon; Thanks on the value tip. Even when drawing I'm still trying to figure it out, same goes for lineweight. I guess it should come with experience. You're right about those edges, I noticed just now. Cheers!

More Studies, Speedpaints, Bridgman stuff. Its about the 60th time for me to join the spartan camp (under community activities!) so I included those too (the little poses). Tried out coloured pencils, trying to get a better sense of colour. Fish are all from reference (book).
I've been drawing many heads lately, during lunch breaks and from ref. Progression is very slow though.

Cool updates. Those fish studies are amazing. Especially the bottom salmon. It really looks like it's come fresh out of the water.

Seems to me like the biggest problem with your heads are the eyes, and putting them far enough into the skull (if that made sense). Don't be afraid of the lines and shadows in there.

Hai; Thanks for the advice. Heads are still real tough for me. I just cant get them to look 'right', there's always something off. The fish were a colour practice at first, trying to understand colours better since I've got a colour deficiency. So I had to use loads of ref too.
Dizon; Thanks! Very useful paintover. Stupid of me to leave the stuff on the left in, I usually spot that ;s. I'm not so good at overlaying textures, I'll see if I can dig up a guide somewhere.
Fregy; Cheers! I have been drawing loads and loads of heads lately, although I think I'm far from good. I'd advice using books from either Loomis or Bridgman for learning, and try to draw from real life. (i.e. taking a moleskine somewhere public and start drawing)


!!!!!TABLET!!!!!

I've finally bought myself a tablet (intuos3 6x8 ). I'm practising hard, but I certainly have a long way to go. I'm loving it though, and I'm hoping to get much better. I'm not yet comfortable with it, and I don't quite know how to use the pen pressure best. This is so much better than using a mouse though.

You are improving in every aspect, your latest head studies are very much better, the placement of eyes are bit off even now, i would suggest you to flip your sketch and study the direction, it might help.

Last sketch is simply awesome, its composition is nice, i think you can add a small character in the foreground, to make it interactive. just a suggestion!

Congrats on the Intuos! I only use a very old , 4x6 graphire. I hope get a bigger tablet someday.

Anyway, as always you always think of nice concepts. I kinda suck on that part. I love the mechanical animal vehicle thingy I do suggest using a perspective guide for it. The feet look off.

Also, the very first tree on the last image could be darker in value. It will add more depth.

I also suggest overall to simplify and just use 4-5 values and big brushes especially during the beginning stages of the work. Just start detailing and using subtler values when working on the detail. I think, in that way, you will still be able to maintain the overall impression/look of the work without ruining it.

Great anatomy studies..the linework is looking good. especially on those noses, maybe the line could be a little heavier on one side to suggest a shadow. A foggy memory is coming back from college where if you're doing a ine drawing then think about where the light is hitting the object and do that line fainter and the one opposite darker to suggest form.

Dizon; Haha, yes. I just kept postponing it, I figured I would need a better understanding of values and colour etc first. But I realize now that practising is a lot faster and more fun with a tablet.
You're totally right on the feet of that machine, I did change them at some point but they are still no good. Thanks for the advice on values and depth, I still don't have a decent work flow. I usually just start somewhere and just add colours without much planning. Thank you.

I love your household pest COW. The texture going on is incredible. Great work on the studies too.

You seem to spend lots of time on putting values into the studies and doing them very smoothly. Perhaps trying to get more bang for your buck per line might be something to try (pen, markers and crayons are a good teacher, anything you can't erase ). Each line then becomes important as opposed to sliding into obscurity. Heavier lines= darker, lighter= lighter, and changing between the two in one line, as well as putting that line in the right spot first try instead of slowly finding your way to the right one. The more info you can accommodate into one line, the better. 3rd image in post 84 is when I think you've gotten the closest to this. Let go of being perfect every time, and work more on understanding what you're seeing.
Anyway enough of a spiel. Feel free to ignore me. I'm mostly harmless.
