I tried the demo and wasn't blown away enough to upgrade from 7.
In my opinion they ignored several key problems.

Actually, let me re-phrase that.
I wasn't blown away AT ALL.

actually, its not a bad program.
if you have painter 7, you won't need upgrading since a lot of the painteresque workflow has changed.
the new guy at corel was quite positive about changing a lot of these issues with a patch.

the digital watercolor sure is a great tool, as it works more like painter 6 watercolor and not like p7 watercolor. so its actually useable for digital illustration and not only showcasing stuff.

the new layer and mask management is nice, if you need it.

a huge contra is the hassle with the new brush selector tool and the brush creator tool (that you need to open up for next to every relevant changein a brush).
both of these issues, along with the re-implementation of custom palettes were issues i talked with rick champagne of corel about and he said that these were themain issues people are complaining about and that they will adress them.

another thing about th ebrushes: most of them are working quite well, but i needed a huge cleanup to feel good with it.
most brushes come in various sizes, i.e.: not only a oils detail brush but an oils detail size 5 brush, an oils detail size 10 brush and an oils detail size 15 brush.
for something you can change with a shortcut and a mouse drag, this is a bit overdone, imho, so i took a bit of time and deleted all of the double and triple variants.

if you don't own any painter version right now, this is a good time to get into it, since their marketing strategy is offensive to say the least never saw a top notch product for that low price.
with the promised issue adressings, p8 could be THE breaker.

in my eyes painter8 looks alittle nicer and has more brush options... that's it, it has other things like the mixing pallete and what not, but i've never once used it.

There is at least one major difference...brush smoothing. Painter 8 has a much smoother quick stroke. Check out this other thread which discusses the issue further:

Both Photoshop 7 and Painter 8 are very capable in this realm, while their immediate predecessors seemingly are not.

This is a very important difference for me.
