Wake's Book, running around an endless loop

Hey, I'm Wake, a.k.a. Taylor. My last sketchbook was getting old and crusty, so I decided to make a new one. I'm trying to change my style and kick things up a notch so I figured a new SB would be a good place to start.

Here's some recent stuff, and some old stuff to get me started. I'm going to update as often as possible.

    Later Peeps!

When you do studies, Don't rush to make something that "looks finished" .. Instead, try to take your time and learn as you go.

You've done some studies, but they look pretty rushed to me.
    but yeah, keep it up!

You may not have been around CA for a while, but it is obvious that you have not stopped drawing. You have left me in the dust! I cannot get over how much your rendering is improving.
Try to apply some of the rendering principles you use in your reffed work, to you imagined work. Some of the pieces coming out of your head are slightly flat. They seem hesitent, as though you don't really know what you want to do with the light and shadow.

Some of your more abstract figures lack definition. What I mean is, the guy with branches coming out of his head for example, I cannot figure out what is supposed to be going on with his torso. I know it is abstract, but it looks like a lumpy blob with some random shadows thrown in. Even if the anatomy is supposed to be extrememly distorted, it will help it to read better if you try to put some definite structure in there.

    Hope these comments are usefull.

Play around with leaving white space a lot more in your pencil studies to up the contrast, then fiddle with it as you please. Good facial feature studies, noses are effin hard to draw.

When you feel bad/iffy about your improvement rate, go back and look at the first page of your earliest sketchbook, and try to tell yourself you haven't improved. Probably won't be able to do it Keep up the great work.

great start to a new book, the eye and nose studies are looking especially nice. on the millitary guy two posts back the proportions start to look a little shaky around his hand but the colors are looking great. don't get discouraged, as caddlewick and iolarnula said your improvement is definitly visible.

some nice use of the pencil here and it al shows some good promise. I think your portraits (probably applies elsewhere aswell) needs some core shadows introducing to give contrast and focal points to the faces. Look at some old black and white photos and you will see what i mean, usually under the eyes and nose there is a big contrast change.

Congratualtions Wake, Unfortunately I can't muster up n e critique as
I'm not that good yet lol, but I remember ur old sketch book and looking
at this new one shows that ur skills has definitely taken a giant leap.
I love the variation of style u have attempted and i think it's great that
u've experimented with loads of different styles.
I have to say though my favourite is the Phoenix that u did with pencil.
Awesome - Keep up the good work man.
