    Jerney / 08-15 / Shibby for Berian

    Hi there,

welcome to my little thread of scribbles, works and nonsense I'll put all my stuff I'll make in this summer break in here and hope to also keep doing that later on. Little bg-info to understand my stuff a bit better: I'm 20, I live in the Netherlands and I just finished my first year in artschool (Willem de Kooning Academie, Rotterdam), doing illustration.

I made quite a lot of stuff this year, I'll put more of that online in a while, when my boyfriend and I are done with redoing my website (www.jerneydewilde.nl, currently under construction). I've learned a lot this year and I enjoyed it a lot, but..(tadadadumm) I haven't made much work for my self. That is what I want to focus on this summer and I hope you can help me with that .

One of the main things that I want to work on are my sketches, because they are un-clear to other people. I kind of make notes, in stead of sketches, which I quite like (as reminders), but aren't very usable to show to third parties, like teachers hehe. A lot of my classmates rock at it and blow everyone away, which annoyes me I want to make better sketches that better represent my skills than they do now. (I developed this way of sketching only this year btw, I used to sketch very differently before, so I think I can get rid of the habit quite easily, if I work on it.)

Secondly I want to work on my technique (digital and traditional, but mainly digital) in making a 'finished product'. My work is always ok, but almost never gets 'wow's. The stuff I make doesn't really appeal to a lot of people, I guess. I want to work at putting in certain elements that makes a piece just 'click' better and communicates with it's viewer, in stead of just being ok.

NOW, I apologize for the long and boring additional info, but now you guys know what I would like to improve the most. Thanks for reading if you did!

Adding a pic for the thumb:

I'll start putting work online now, and add more as I can.

    [1] Leaves
I made these 2 days ago, for my (under construction) website. We'll be doing a lot with these in a while, tell me what you think .

I had to make a fictional cover for the dutch magazine Rails for school.

    [3] Purefantasy
For another subject I was free to choose a magazine to do another fictional cover for, I chose the dutch magazine PureFantasy. It had to be somewhat of a selfportrait and you had to use the format of the magazine style (titlebars and such).

    [4] DSG
These are some sketches I made for a recent DSG, the 'Wildy twisted tendrils of stone are home to bird multitude'-thingie. I wanted to make something directly in Photoshop, but that wasn't working at that moment, so I made quite a few sketches in my dummy (A5 btw). These are the kind of thumbnail-note-like-sketches I often make, that don't really impress anyone I want to make an real illustration of this DSG, or at least a well worked-out sketch.

That's it for now, I have to make photos of the rest (3D/traditional/printed stuff). You can critique me any way you want please do! Thanks!

I'm trying to improve my digital coloring (in Photoshop) and I plan to do several portraits. I'm using this tutorial: link and this stock image: link

At this moment I still use the photo underneath my colouring and I use the colorpicker to get the right colours. At first I always try not to do that and just pick colours and sketch it myself, but I'm not skilled enough (yet) to do that.

This is where I'm at now, and for now I'm very pleased. This is better than I've ever done before, but there is much more to improve. I think I'm at step 1 or 2 of the tutorial, but I'm not sure. Before I was really struggling to make my colours blend, that feels better already.

On to the next step or do you guys think I still need to work on the "Colors and light source" step more, before going to the "Refinement and depth" step? (on several parts I have the feeling I went into the details too much already, but I kind of need that to like it )

Ages ago I promised a friend of mine I'd draw her as a furry of her dog. She would do the same with me. We kindo forgot about it, but she started with it now. I started sketching in photoshop a bit and this came out. I think I'll keep it this way and make another to make a full colour pic.

    [11] Shibby for Berian

I made 2 drawings for my boyfriend a while back, when one of his cats died by crawling into the washing machine.. Anyway Berian, (his sister in law) wanted one too, but I didn't get to it yet. Today I made a quick sketch and then these lines to paint over with acrylics (on A5-sized watercolour paper, wanted do it with watercolours at first). I'll try to make some progress photos (don't expect too much hehe)

I opened a topic in the Critque Center with a step by step of the Shibby painting. Hoping to get some critiques (as no one ever looks in here )
