USEFUL STUFF!

just dropped by to say i'm still flabbergasted by that "trampled underfoot" piece on page 1 - it's been on my background for almost six months now and it has inspired me to take up the pen and ink now and then.
Kev, I always wonder how people approach these sort of paintings were the subject isn't likely to stand still for very long. Was it like a speedpainting/lifepainting or a partially photo-referenced painting? Or a bit of both?

Inking like that inspired me to pick up a pen when I was 8, beautiful stuff, sir...the music is pretty good as well (I'm sure Brian Wilson would adore it).
Actually, I want to buy "Dead Rider", hopefully I will be able to find it here in Italy.

Love the Zen brushstrokes on the cat's body Kev. Good job - it would really be really terrific to see more of your paintings!

Thank you everybody for the generous compliments on the work...
So... Dead Rider 3 is on my editor's desk.
By way of explanation, here is just some of what I decided I had to discard (for various creative reasons) that was originally meant for the issue...

Whoa, if that's what you had to throw out, I can't wait to see what made it in.
How many pages in this issue?
Great work, Kev.
Whoooo! Kev! This is superb!
I think I don't have to say how great your work is. My personal favourites are your sensitive drawings, esp. the shaded ones on the first pages.
I've been wondering about your inking technique- have you posted a tutorial somewhere?
I don't have time right now to look through the whole thread, but will certainly come back later. (I've been procratinating the whole morning, shame on me. Back to work now).
Hi uli, thank you for the compliment. I liked your painting.
My inking technique is Winsor & Newton series 7 sable rushes, 1, 2, and sometimes 3. With india ink, currently Dr. Martin's Bombay black. I also use old school dipping pen nibs of various kinds. (I still haven't found one that I think is really good, however. A better mousetrap needs to be invented.) I use whatever paper I have around, from 2 ply bristol board to heavy illustration board. And I use Daler Rowney's pro white for correcting errors and inking with white.
I always do small thumbnails in ballpoint first, then scan them in and arrange them as a page, then print the page at about 10x15. I then lightbox off the sketches onto good paper, do finished pencils, then ink over them.
Or something like that.
Thanks much brother James, brother t11 and brother Chupacabra!![]()
The issue will be 22 pages. All killah no fillah! Unless when you get it you think it sucks, in which case I humbly apologize.
Here's more discarded panels and such...

Woah, that's a lot to throw out! I hope you're satisfied with the stuff that made the cut! I might have asked this earlier, but do you think the final book will ship to Scandinavia?

Amazingly impressive work!!
Incredible job man, just beautiful.
Sometimes your work reminds me John Buscema stuff.
Solid drawings, powerful inking style and great dramatic compositions.
Your compositions are AWESOME! The highest point in your work.
Keep it up!

Kev, i love your stuff man - such a great combination between b&w drawings, inking and classic painting. Keep 'em coming!

Always in awe of your draftsmanship.
Damn you, kev. I just had to go back through this thread from the beginning. Again.
At least this time I thought to download all the pretty pitchers.
I was once on the receiving end of a critique so savagely nasty, I marched straight out of class to the office and changed my major (sketchbook).
Man, if this is the discarded, I can't wait to get my hands on the final book..
You have one of the best inking techniques I've ever seen.. apart from the drawing of course.. It reminds me of Enrique Breccia sometimes.. (not saying that yours is similar.. just that reminds me..)
Wonderful..

Hey Kev,
It's been a while since I visited. I see you're still pushing the high contrast b&w stuff and even some colors. They're all good but I really like your traditional cat portrait above best.
Anyways, keep up, this thread is rocking!
