hypocalvin's skbk - (update: girls and cars)

Hi - this is a sketchbook I bought for 2 US dollars in Taiwan (pretty good deal huh). I've been doing various studies of cartoons, environments, people, realisitic/imaginate portraits - and just a variety of things to pass the time and to expand my breadth. Many of the pictures are reference and/or directly copied. As you can see from the first one - it is a Wesley Burt study (that guys rocks - Hi Mr. Burt if you are reading this). Other references I use include Dean Yeagle, and.. uh.. yeah. Crits are of course more than welcome.

Hey! I really like the portraits, and also your more stylized cartoon work. I especially like the one of the boy with the pie - something about that one is really pleasant to look at. I'd love to see more.

I like the glow and contrast of values in the first portrait posted.

I really like your style. I like the deliberate quality of the lines, and how each one of them does such a good job of defining volume and shape. I don't want to just leave with a "looks good, show more" comment, so here's my two cents, for what it's worth. On a couple of the portraits (the second one from the bottom in your most recent post, for example) the shape of the head or the size of the forehead (I can't tell exactly which one) seems off. Like the forehead is too small for the rest of the face. It's only on a couple of them, but it's something to keep in mind.

That being said, I do want to see more.

hey guys thanks for the replys.. here's a quick update. I'll make sure to make a fuller reply tomorrow.

gmc: thanks for the comment.. uh. I'll watch out on the proportions and teh foreheads then. I'm aware I have a bad habit of making the heads way bigger than the body.. but uh, I'll look into this. I'll post more tomorrow. Thanks guys.

    oh hey thanks tool.
I have a lot more to upload.

I usually don't like uploading sketches because I feel that it takes such a long time and is such a hassel. But, I also feel it's really good for me to reflect on what I've done, get critiques on my work, and contribute to the awesome family we have here.

yay chris!! an update finally I wouldn't mind some background on what some of these designs are for, like the plant statue deal? Looks really awesome but I'm not sure what it is exactly haha, other than what I can infer, which is just designs for like a statue? Also i'm really digging these wrapped planes you're doing for studying leaves, you have some really nice curves going on with that.

something to look out for - on a bunch of these sketches of heads (mainly the ones that are styalized) they have a tendancy to be shifted towards the right. Like all the features are kinda slanted or shifted that direction - try flipping the images if you don't already see it. Same goes for that styalized 3/4th view of your head - looks like your missing a chunk of skull your head goes up high in the front and then the skull doesnt follow through. Really though I assume you know this so I'm just playing it safe

thats about all I can say other than that though the ID stuff is just looking gorgeous, I love all the forms. Also this picture you did at the end of the girl is looking pretty good too, I'd like to see more of these. Anyways call me we'll do some sketching. see ya dude

edit: draw over~~ tried to show how i think the skull would look, also i tried to show that the skull itself seems a bit thin, like your face should be wider I think? anyways hope this is correct and helpful
